Spring 2017 Opening Day at
South Lake Youth Sports Baseball
The fog and mist didn’t keep the spectators, sports fans, and volunteers from opening day of Spring baseball at Minneola Athletic Complex. Approximately 1,000 people and 345 players gathered at the baseball fields reported Oscar Trujillo, member of the youth board. League president Nicole May confirmed that this is the largest season yet.
In spite of the gloomy morning mist, thirty-one teams were ready to play ball. The coaches gathered their players for the opening ceremony. As the teams assembled around the perimeter of the field, there appeared an array of team colors and loud applause from parents and friends. Minneola mayor Pat Kelley threw out the first ball, the sun came out, and the games began.
It was a busy, but very successful day for the league. The concession stand remained busy all day. Trujillo said he flipped more than 600 burgers.
The teams are comprised of different age groups: Smart Start (3-4 years old), T-Ball (5-6 years old), Rookies, machine pitch (7-8 years old), Minors (9-10 years old), Majors (11 -12 years old) and Juniors (13-15 years old).
