“Faith neighborhood center extends training opportunity for adults with developmental disabilities”
Building Blocks Ministries and FAITH Neighborhood Center are working together to serve our community. FAITH Neighborhood Center provides food, clothing and services for families and individuals in the south Lake Communities. Moving to the new facility on Timber Village Road in Groveland created a need for more volunteers. Building Blocks Ministries was searching for a community site for their Exploring Work program that could provide a work like settling for adults with developmental disabilities to volunteer each week. FAITH Neighborhood Center provides an opportunity for individuals in Building Blocks Exploring Work Program to sort food items, stock food shelves, prepare food boxes, sort clothing, hang clothing, place clothing on racks, and complete various clerical and custodial tasks. This opportunity is important for individuals with developmental disabilities, as it provides them the chance to see what working is like and to learn skills that build their resume.
Peter Hornbuckle, Program Manager at Building Blocks Ministries is grateful for the new partnership as it enhances the Exploring Work Program by providing training in the community.
Building Blocks Ministries’ vision is for full inclusion and participation of individuals with developmental disabilities in all aspects of our community. Executive Director Paula Whetro is encouraged by the partnership as it aligns with the vision that the organization had over ten years ago when they began their work in the south Lake County area.
Building Blocks Ministries’ mission is “to serve individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to dream, believe and achieve; through advocacy, coalition building, and job and life skills training in a safe and trusted environment”.
