This week Clermont Waterfront parkrun celebrated its 200th parkrun in Clermont with 100 runners and walkers enjoying our alternate Lake Hiawatha course with a new banner marking the occasion!
It was back in April of 2013 that the first parkrun was completed along the beautiful shores of Lake Minneola here in Clermont. On that day after months of planning and meetings led by Karen and Tim Bowler, who brought the parkrun concept to Clermont from the U.K., we had 38 runners and 10 volunteers who participated in our first event. Thanks to a dedicated team of Event and Run Directors, volunteers, the City of Clermont and of course our runners and walkers from around the world we have been going strong ever since!
With our great location here in Central Florida along with our weather and fast course we continue to draw not only a large number of athletes who either live or come to Clermont to train but we have also warmly welcomed thousands of International visitors from around the world who make our parkrun part of their must do Holiday plans. Currently, Clermont parkrun holds the U.S. record for participants at 214 a record that we know other U.S. parkruns are looking to break!
Many thanks this week to Kathy Kyle who provided our parkrun banner marking the 200th run and a special thanks to Amanda Walsh from Cheeser’s Palace Café, who graciously provided not 1 but 2 delicious cakes for us to enjoy after our weekly post-run coffee! Our runners as always thank Larry Hevner and Frances Post for providing the water each week!
Also, take a minute and check out our chronicle of photos taken by Hector Clemente and others on our parkrun webpage and you will see the many smiling faces that make up our parkrun family!
This week we had exactly 100 participants who ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 45 were first timers and 3 recorded new Personal Bests. Once again we had a large number of visitors from both the U.S. and International parkruns that included several of the Run Directors and volunteers from Eagan, Minnesota parkrun, Nate and Melissa Damro along with Scott and Michelle Horn. From across the pond, Joy and Donald Bell participated in their 20th visit to Clermont, their regular parkrun is Bushy park where parkun began 13 years ago.
The top spot this week was claimed by one our visitors, Byron EDWARDS from the Bury Athletic Club in the U.K. in a time of 19:11. Steven CASTLE also from the U.K. was second over the line in a strong time of 20:18. Josh CASTLEMAN one of our local Clermont runners from Team S4, who is also one of our most dependable volunteers was third over the line with a nice time of 20:29.
Gabby WINTERBOTTOM from the Huntingdon parkun in the U.K. was the first female over the line in 24:19. Anne MCFARLANE of the Clermont Runners group was the second woman with a time of 25:13 and Breanna PEINE one of our Junior runners and also from the Clermont area took third in a time of 25:31.
