Clermont – November 28
The East Ridge High School boys’ basketball team opened up the 2017-18 season Tuesday night with a game against Mount Dora High School (1-0). The Knights played host to the Hurricanes of Mount Dora, and sought to successfully defend their home court.
The Knights and the Hurricanes did battle through a tight first quarter. In spite of some hot three-point shooting by Mount Dora’s guards early in the quarter, the Knights would lead 14-13 by the quarter’s end. The Knights regrouped in the second quarter and were able to extend their lead into halftime – leading 33 to 24. The Knights’ coach, Mike Clutter, kept his Knights’ legs fresh for the second half by substituting his starters with his bench. The Knights have depth to their bench that should help the team succeed over the long haul. The second half was where the Knights were able to establish their dominance. Going into the fourth quarter, the Knights were able to extend their lead, and led the Hurricanes 50 to 36. The final quarter was when the fresh legs kicked in, and the Knights looked to put Mount Dora away. The Knights secured the victory with a 72 – 42 win, holding the Hurricanes to just six points in the fourth quarter.
The Knights were led by junior Kendrick Brown, who scored 13 points coming off of the bench. Additionally, seniors Daniel Vaughn, Darion Carter, and Aaron Vaughn contributed 12, 10, and 9 points respectively. Seniors Omar Morales and Jared Arellano delivered three assists each. Additionally, seniors Jamari Mabone, Aaron Vaughn, and Omar Morales pulled six rebounds each to push the Knights to victory.
Groveland – December 1
The East Ridge High School boys’ basketball team (1-0) traveled to play cross-town rival South Lake High School (0-2) on Friday night. Always a highly anticipated game, the Knights hoped to establish themselves early against South Lake.
The game got off to a slow start, but the Knights were able to pull ahead of the Eagles of South Lake with a lead of 14 – 7 at the end of the first quarter. The offensive pace of the game changed drastically in the second quarter, as both teams posted more than twenty points each. At halftime the Knights lead the Eagles 40 – 27. The Knights made some adjustments at halftime to offset South Lake’s two-three zone. Additionally, the Knights sought to pick up the pace on defense to quell the Eagles’ scoring. The Knights would lead 60 to 41 going into the fourth quarter, and sought to duplicate their third-quarter efforts in the fourth quarter. The Knights’ defense held South Lake to only five points, as they charged on to victory with a 84 – 46 win.
The Knights were led by senior Omar Morales, who scored 23 points. Additionally, junior Kendrick Brown, and seniors Daniel Vaughn and Darion Carter contributed 16, 14, and 13 points respectively. Darion Carter was the Knights’ high man in rebounds (10), assists (7), and steals (7) helping to push the Knights to victory.
The Knights will open up district play on Thursday, December 7 at 7:00 as they travel to Orlando to face the undefeated Eagles of Edgewater High School (3-0).
