The City of Clermont proudly recognizes the courage, dedication, and self-sacrifice of the Tuskegee Airmen, whose legacy continues to inspire generations, including the men and women currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. In a historic proclamation issued by Mayor Tim Murry, March 27, 2025, has been officially designated as Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day in Clermont.
The Tuskegee Airmen, active from 1941 to 1946, were a groundbreaking group of African-American military aviators who defied segregation and discrimination to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II. Their bravery and excellence paved the way for the eventual full integration of the U.S. military. Their efforts not only secured victory in the war but also advanced the broader fight for racial equality and justice in America.
The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen is particularly significant in Florida, which has officially recognized their contributions and sacrifices by establishing Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day as a legal holiday, observed annually on the fourth Thursday in March. This designation serves as a tribute to the Airmen’s remarkable service and the enduring impact they have had on the nation’s military and civil rights progress.
Clermont is honored to count among its residents one of these distinguished heroes, Lt. Daniel Keel, who is approaching his 103rd birthday. Lt. Keel served as a Flight Officer in the Air Force from 1943 to 1946 and was one of only five Tuskegee Airmen to receive a triple airman rating. His exemplary service and contributions to the nation’s defense stand as a testament to the excellence and resilience of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Mayor Tim Murry, in his official proclamation, emphasized the significance of commemorating the Tuskegee Airmen’s achievements and their lasting impact on American history. “The courage, dedication, self-sacrifice, and compassion of these ‘ordinary heroes’ continue to inspire our nation,” he stated, underscoring the importance of recognizing and honoring their contributions.
As the City of Clermont prepares to observe this meaningful day, residents are encouraged to reflect on the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and their role in shaping a more just and inclusive society. The community stands united in gratitude for their service and the path they paved for future generations of military personnel and citizens alike.
A special recognition event is expected to be held in honor of Lt. Keel and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen, providing an opportunity for the community to express its appreciation for their valor and sacrifice.
