Following the success of its first two anime and trading card game (TCG) events, Cagan Crossings is gearing up for its third community event on Saturday, October 24 with a special Halloween twist. The growing event has quickly become a popular gathering for anime fans, TCG players, collectors, families and local creatives, bringing the community together for an afternoon filled with fandom, shopping, creativity and fun.

“We were thrilled by the response to our first two events,” said event organizer, Ian Diaz- Sanchez. “It was exciting to see people from the community come together around something they love, and we knew we wanted to create another opportunity for everyone to connect. The October event gives us a chance to build on that momentum and add a little Halloween fun.”

The Not-So-Haunted Halloween Market, hosted by The Creative Grove Market, will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. at The Glen Clubhouse, 16310 Macon St., Clermont, FL 34714. Admission is free. The October 24 event will feature a variety of activities designed to bring together anime fans, TCG players, collectors, artists and families, including:

– Anime & TCG vendors 
– Costume Contest
– Local vendors and creative businesses
– Arts & crafts
– Stamp Rally
– Halloween-themed fun and activities
– And plenty of opportunities to discover unique collectibles, handmade items and fandom-inspired creations.

“We’re happy to see the incredible enthusiasm these new events are generating—not only among our residents, but throughout the surrounding community,” says Jessica Whitehouse, Director of Marketing. “It’s exciting to create opportunities that bring people together, introduce them to something new, and showcase all that Cagan Crossings has to offer.”

Vendors and Volunteers Welcome

Organizers are also looking for local vendors, artists, creators and small businesses interested in participating in the October 24 event. Vendors with anime, gaming, TCG, handmade, collectible, art or other creative offerings are encouraged to get involved.

Community members who would like to help make the event happen can also volunteer. Volunteers can assist with event activities, guest experiences, setup and other event-day needs.

Lake County Indivisibles invites community members to participate in a No Kings: Vote Early event designed to encourage voter participation and emphasize the importance of exercising the right to vote.

The event will take place on October 17, from 10 am to 1 pm, beginning with a brief rally at Clermont City Hall, located at 685 W. Montrose Street in downtown Clermont. Following the rally, participants will march to State Road 50 to wave signs and demonstrate their support for voting rights and civic engagement.

Organizers say this event carries a special significance as participants come together to advocate for the right to vote, encourage greater voter participation and inspire eligible voters to cast their ballots early.

Community members are encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbors to attend, regardless of political affiliation. Democrats, Republicans, independent voters and those with no party affiliation are all welcome.

Inspired by the life of a real woman who endured an appalling childhood and a forced marriage as a teenager, No Way Out but Through is an emotional story of survival, resilience and, ultimately, the possibility of healing.

The novel arrives at a particularly significant moment. Across the country, stories continue to emerge about underage girls being trafficked, coerced or trapped in abusive relationships. 

The story begins when author Shannon Irwin meets Grace Ferrall, a younger woman with a shocking story to tell. Shannon agrees to write Grace’s story, setting in motion an unusual relationship in which both women are ultimately forced to confront painful chapters of their own pasts.

Told as a frame story with dual narration, the novel moves between present-day Pawleys Island, South Carolina, and rural Oklahoma in the 1990s.

Grace’s story begins in Robbins, Louisiana, where she grows up with an alcoholic father and a mother whose volatile mood swings make home an unpredictable place. Barely 15 and living in Shale, Oklahoma, Grace is manipulated into marrying Rafe, a much older and abusive man.

What follows is years of abuse, multiple pregnancies and miscarriages—and a life in which escape seems almost impossible.

With help from an unlikely ally, Grace finally gets away. But freedom does not come easily. Faced with the daunting task of protecting herself and her two daughters, Grace must make choices no one should ever have to make.

As Shannon and Grace grow closer, their relationship becomes something neither woman expected. By revealing the stories they have kept buried, they begin to confront their own inner demons. Their willingness to be vulnerable with one another opens the door to something neither thought possible: trust, healing and a renewed belief in the resilience of the human spirit.

The novel is the latest work from an author whose career has been steeped in literature and teaching. She taught English for 33 years, at both the college and high-school levels, including Advanced Placement students.

Susan Beckham Zurenda debut novel, Bells for Eli, won numerous awards, including first place for Best First Book—Fiction in the IPPY (Independent Publisher Book Awards). Her second novel, The Girl From the Red Rose Motel, received the Patricia Winn Award in Southern Fiction and an IPPY Gold Medal for Southeast Fiction, among other honors. She has also won the South Carolina Fiction Prize twice.

With No Way Out but Through, she turns her attention to a difficult subject that has too often remained in the shadows.

According to the Zurenda, approximately 315,000 minors were legally married in the United States between 2000 and 2021, and most were girls married to adult men. Through Grace’s story, No Way Out but Through gives a human face to a complex and troubling issue while offering something beyond the pain: a story about courage, connection and the possibility of reclaiming one’s life.
