Clermont has been the home to many family-owned businesses since its inception in 1884. From citrus to farming, restaurants to motels, real estate to fashion design, Clermont has witnessed businesses come and go during its nearly 150 years of existence. Some have left memories on multiple generations of Clermont natives, and those who have been around Clermont for a long time.

One such business that was brought to Clermont from Morris Plains, New Jersey, in 1965 was Bell Ceramics Inc, once located on the grounds of the present-day City of Clermont public ramp that is nestled on property between East Avenue and Third Street.

Richard Bell

Memories of Bell Ceramics Inc, a successful ceramic and porcelain product manufacturer, resurfaced recently when family member and beloved retired Clermont High School teacher, Toni “Ma” Bell, passed away on May 16th after a brief illness. Toni’s late husband, Richard, was the son of Bell Ceramics founders Mildred and Harry Bell. Mildred was an accomplished artist and by 1947 had created a successful art school in the couple’s hometown of Morris Plains, NJ. The school eventually introduced ceramics to its list of classes offered, and that introduction would lead to the foundation of a business that would last for more than fifty years and three generations of families.

Mildred had a talent for art, and her husband Harry had a successful trait for marketing and retail. In 1948, the couple decided to join ideas into a business adventure of offering ceramic supplies for art schools and individual hobbyists nationwide. The couple sold the very successful art school that Mildred had founded and focused on creating Bell Ceramics.

During the 1950’s, Mildred had become successful at developing and selling porcelain and ceramic self-contained starter kits for individual retailers. Along with her success, Mildred developed a liquid glaze for product finishes and pioneered several teaching techniques.

In 1952, the Bell family opened a retail store where the couple sold products to ceramic studios and developed their own original molds and ceramic slips- a liquid mixture of water and clay used for joining, decorating, and casting in pottery and ceramics. This creativity would lead to the introduction of the White Orchid Porcelain Slip- an innovative formula that would revolutionize the ceramic and porcelain industry, while also catapulting the family’s business into huge success.

Soon after the couple made the decision to focus their business on a wholesale manner in 1953, Harry passed away somewhat unexpectedly. Mildred was left with not only tough business decisions but now the sole responsibility of raising the couple’s three children- Richard, Peter and Nancy. By 1958, Mildred was not only championing a successful and growing business but had met and married Jacob Lucas- a successful business owner himself.

Bell Ceramics was located on Lake Minneola / East Avenue

The Bell business continued to grow, and Mildred had authored several educational books that led to ongoing relationships, and business deals with top sculptors across the country. In 1965, the couple made the decision to move the business to Clermont and escape the harsh winters of New Jersey. The couple located a large building that was once a citrus packing house built in 1922 by the Clermont Citrus Growers Association. The building would accommodate the space needed and was conveniently located by an active railway line that transported goods throughout the state. Easy access to nearby highways such as US-27 would make it easy to import raw materials for manufacturing while exporting finished products to clients throughout the nation.

Mildred’s love of dolls and her collaborations with nationally known doll artists rapidly led to Bell Ceramics, Inc.’s distinct reputation of being the leader in doll sculpture design and innovative techniques for molds, doll painting, and lace draping. During the 1960’s, Mildred’s sons, Richard and Peter, took a more hands on approach to the family business and that would eventually lead to Richard becoming the business president. Mildred and Jacob remained active in the business until her death in 1977, and his in 1988.

Bell Ceramics, Inc would continue to grow into a multi-million-dollar company with product distributors all over the world. In 1986, the management team, which now included Mildred’s son-in-law, Calvin (Cal) Hettinger, founded the International Foundation of Doll Makers (IFDM). The IFDM continues to be the leading dollmaking organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the art of creating fine porcelain dolls around the world.

With 200 distributors across the country and up to 30 overseas, Bell Ceramics, Inc also supplied materials for porcelain Cabbage Patch Kids, a version of the popular stuffed dolls that were a big sensation with children in the mid 1980’s.

By 2005, the world had changed a lot since the late 1940’s. Those changes included overseas competition and the dwindling interest in the time-honored hobby of ceramic and porcelain among the younger generations. Bell Ceramics Inc, a business that once employed as many as 50 employees and provided hometown work opportunities, made the difficult decision to close the doors.

Bell sold off its assets and product lines to a Cedar Hill, Texas, manufacturer that would continue to sell under the name The Bell Collection Ltd. The City of Clermont purchased the building and land in 2003 under a lease agreement with the intention of building a new community center. Over time, the plan for the site changed multiple times, but it would eventually lead to the present-day boat ramp that serves as a key entryway into the beautiful Clermont Chain-of-Lakes.

The Bell family has built and left a successful legacy that will be remembered in the local history books for future generations. The Bell family left a wonderful legacy that included business, service to the community, sincere friendships, and education. The passing of Toni Bell, affectionately known as “Ma Bell” by her students, will unfortunately be the final chapter of the Bell family era in the Clermont area.

Clermont and the South Lake community hold a deep, rich, and documented history. Much of this information and more is available at the Clermont Historic Village, 490 West Avenue, Clermont.

The Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller is announcing the release of Lake County’s annual audited financial reports for Fiscal Year 2024-2025.

The Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) provides an in-depth, detailed look at the sources and uses of county funds, including property, sales, and gas taxes; intergovernmental revenues; and various user fees that finance operations, as well as the expenses of governmental activities.

The document offers citizens an opportunity to see the financial implications of providing services such as fire protection and law enforcement; civil emergency services; construction and maintenance of highways, streets, and other infrastructure; economic development incentives; social and human services; and cultural and recreational services.

The Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) is a separate document that provides a summarized version of the ACFR.

“Because the ACFR consists of over 200 pages of detailed financial statements, notes, schedules, and reports, it is important that we also provide the information in a simplified format,” said Gary Cooney, Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller. “The PAFR presents the county’s fiscal year 2024-2025 financial activity in a way that is easier to read and understand.”

Both reports are available online on the Lake County Clerk’s website atwww.LakeCountyClerkFL.gov/Financials. They are also available by contacting the Clerk’s Finance Department at 352-343-9808.

As Dash Sports celebrates its 20th anniversary, owner Kimberly Grogan is reflecting on the journey that transformed a small 400-square-foot store in the NTC into a beloved business rooted in community, perseverance, and passion.

Looking back on those early days, Kimberly remembers the fear and uncertainty that came with taking such a big leap. One of the very first inventory purchases — a $500 order of Timex watches — felt enormous for the tiny shop just getting started. In those days, her young son Gavin would often nap in the back room while she worked tirelessly to build the business. Today, Gavin stands 6’1”, serving as a reminder of just how much time, dedication, and life have grown alongside the store.

Over the past two decades, Dash Sports has become more than just a retail shop. Kimberly credits the many incredible employees who helped shape the business into what it is today, along with the countless customers who became lifelong friends along the way.

The journey was filled with long nights rearranging merchandise to maximize every inch of space, counting inventory, learning new systems, adapting to evolving technology, and constantly striving to improve. Through every challenge, Kimberly remained committed to creating a welcoming and trusted place for runners, walkers, and athletes alike.

One particularly meaningful moment came at 5 am on October 10, 2024, when Kimberly sat at her kitchen table sketching and measuring fixtures for the new Winter Garden location — a dream milestone for any retail store owner.

Despite the hard work and sleepless nights, Kimberly says she would not trade the experience for anything.

The business, she shared, gave her the opportunity to live the life she always wanted — balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship while building a career she truly loves.

Kimberly also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the customers who have supported Dash Sports throughout the years by trusting the team with their feet, fitness goals, and continued loyalty. She says there is still joy in opening new inventory, helping customers find the perfect shoes, and working alongside a dedicated team each day.

Most importantly, Kimberly credits her faith for guiding her path over the last 20 years and for continuing to bless the work that brings her such fulfillment.

With gratitude for the past and excitement for the future, Dash Sports now looks ahead to the next 20 years of serving the community

At The Harvest Market, a community market recently relaunched its café. The updated space, located at 20180 US Highway 27, Ste 306 Clermont, now features an expanded café area designed to give guests even more room to relax, gather, and enjoy fresh menu offerings. To make room for the enhanced café experience, the market reduced its grocery section, creating a more café-focused atmosphere for customers looking to sip, snack, and socialize.

Meanwhile, meat lovers have a brand-new destination to explore in South Lake County.

Haven Butcher Shop, located at 3301 S Hwy 27, Clermont, is now officially open next to Dunkin’. The new butcher shop brings premium meats and specialty selections to the area, giving local residents another high-quality option for steaks, cuts, and fresh products.

And there’s more on the way for Clermont food fans. Huey Magoo’s, located at 3001 US 27, Clermont, will soon open its new chicken tenders restaurant location next to Chipotle Mexican Grill. Known for its hand-breaded chicken tenders and signature sauces, the fast-growing restaurant chain is expected to become another popular dining stop for locals and visitors alike.

From expanded cafés and specialty butcher shops to new restaurant openings, Clermont’s dining scene continues to grow with exciting new options for the community.

A Central Florida native, Commissioner Parks has dedicated his career to public service, community engagement, and sustainable growth. In addition to serving as Lake County District 2 Commissioner, Parks is a small business owner and certified urban and regional planner. He earned degrees from the Florida Institute of Technology and a graduate certificate from the University of Florida.

Known for his strong community involvement, Parks works closely with local organizations, supports youth initiatives, and hosts monthly “Coffee and Conversations” gatherings to stay connected with residents. He remains passionate about economic development, conservation, and enhancing quality of life while championing initiatives that strengthen Lake County’s future and preserve its natural resources.

Barker, who serves as Lake County Manager, oversees the professional management and operations of more than 1,000 employees and an annual budget of approximately $1 billion. She was unanimously appointed by the Board of County Commissioners in February 2022 after serving as Interim County Manager beginning in August 2021.

Since joining Lake County in 2013, Barker has brought extensive experience in public administration, budgeting, and organizational leadership. Throughout her tenure, she has held several key leadership positions, including Budget Director, Executive Director of Administrative Services, and Deputy County Manager.

The Lake County 2050 Comprehensive Plan Update will serve as the County’s guiding vision for policy and decision-making over the next 10 to 25 years. The plan aims to address growth management while protecting Lake County’s environmental assets — including areas of critical State importance — and expanding opportunities for diverse housing options.

County leaders emphasized that the 2050 Update is the next step in evaluating and preserving the County’s valuable resources while ensuring Lake County remains a thriving and sustainable community for future generations.

The ultimate goal of the plan is to create a healthy, sustainable, and diverse community that balances responsible growth with environmental stewardship and an enhanced quality of life for all residents.

Throughout his years of service, Kelley faced challenges head-on, consistently choosing the path that was right rather than the path that was easy. Yet despite the growth, Chuck has never lost the small-town values that shaped him: service, kindness, and a deep love for community.

A graduate of Clermont High School, Chuck launched his law enforcement career at the remarkably young age of 16 as a communications officer with the Clermont Police Department. He later served with Orange County law enforcement, eventually becoming a road sergeant supervisor. Known for rolling up his sleeves and leading from the front, Chuck earned respect not by standing behind the badge, but by standing beside his team and the community he served.

But if there’s one thing South Lake residents know about Chuck, it’s that retirement from one job simply means volunteering for five more.

Chuck is currently serving his sixth term as President of the Kiwanis Club of Clermont and remains actively involved with numerous local organizations, including the City of Clermont Planning and Zoning Board, Cooper Memorial Library Association, The Neighborhood Center of South Lake, Clermont Historic Village, and Building Blocks Ministries. Whether helping guide responsible growth, preserving local history, or supporting neighbors in need, Chuck seems to have mastered the art of being everywhere at once.

And when he’s not busy serving the community? You might find him digging in the garden, researching Clermont history, or enjoying the outdoors. In many ways, Chuck is a walking history book with gardening gloves on—someone who treasures both the roots and future of his hometown.

As a contributor to the South Lake Tablet, he also helps tell the stories that bind the community together, ensuring that Clermont’s past, present, and future continue to be celebrated.

Though Chuck would likely shy away from the spotlight, those who know him understand that his quiet dedication has helped shape South Lake for decades. He represents the very spirit of the Ann Dupee Gem of the Hills Award: humble service, unwavering commitment, and a genuine love for community.

Congratulations to Chuck Seaver—one of Clermont’s true hometown gems.

It is always sad to see a local business close, especially one that provided families and the community with an affordable place to gather and enjoy a meal together.
