Guests were treated to a lovely assortment of teas, accompanied by an array of freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches, and beautifully prepared desserts. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it easy to linger, sip, and savor every moment.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the dedicated committee whose hard work made the event such a success. Special congratulations to Co-Chairmen Judy Padoan and Ann Bonacki, along with committee members Patty, Linda, Helen, Carol, Christine, Kristy, Gladys, Sylvia, and Sonia. Their attention to detail and thoughtful planning created a truly memorable experience for all who attended.

The Clermont Woman’s Club, chartered in 1927, continues its long-standing tradition of service as a non-profit organization committed to supporting the community. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month, September through May, at 12:30 p.m. at their clubhouse located at 655 W. Broome Street in Clermont. If you have never visited Clermont’s Historic Village or, if it has been a long time since you visited, you may want to make plans to go there soon.  There have been some big changes to the display in one of the buildings and more changes around the Village are in the works.

For the past few months some dedicated volunteers have been working tirelessly to redo the display in the World War II Quonset hut.  Most of the printed material that was on the shelves in the lighted cases has been digitized and the originals are now stored in archival boxes.  Copies of those materials and other items are now on a new vertical display.  Also on vertical display are several interesting photographs of individuals and events from the war.

So, what happened to the space freed up when the print material was removed?  A lot of interesting items that had been stored in trunks in the Quonset hut including quite a few items brought home from Germany after the war by our returning troops are now out for visitors to see.

Additionally, every item on display in a case, on top of a case, next to a case, or on the wall by a case has been given a number.  Sheets are provided to help visitors identify objects.

The Historic Village, located at 490 West Avenue, is open every weekend from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  Admission to the Village is free but a donation of $5.00 per person over 12 is suggested.

If you are interested in the history of your community or history in general, consider joining the Historical Society.  Annual dues are only $25.00 for an individual & $35.00 for a couple.  The Historical Society meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 PM in the Depot at the Village.  The public is always welcome.

Clermont Garden Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The clubhouse at 849 West Ave., Clermont is available for rental at very reasonable rates. Available for your use during your rental are the clubhouse (complete with table/chairs, kitchen and 2 restrooms), the outdoor paved patio and gazebo on the beautiful garden grounds.

Clermont Garden Club’s Yard of the Month for March is that of Tom Byrnes, at 10447 Largo Louisa Court in Clermont. Tom’s garden is vibrant, busy, and alive…abundant with plants and flowers for the pollinators. The yard is packed with passionfruit vines, herbs, various salvias (including Salvia Amistad), culpheas (including Culphea Schumannii), porterweeds plants (in blue, coral and red), firespikes (in pink, red, fuschia and purple), heirloom pentas in a multitude of colors and flowering trees (including a fragrant white cestrum).

 

Tom’s journey into pollinator gardening began about 32 years ago when he placed a potted flowering plant by the entrance, and saw a hummingbird come to sip its nectar. Intrigued and delighted, Tom wanted to draw more pollinators to his yard. After planting salvias, he then saw lots of butterflies. Tom began learning about which plants were hosts for which butterfly larvae, and he continued to plant these in his garden. During the growing season, Tom’s garden is abuzz with monarch, zebra, Gulf fritillary and various swallowtail butterflies (along with the hummingbirds).

Tom is a former teacher. With the wealth of knowledge from his personal gardening experiences, Tom freely shares gardening tips with others. Tom is the administrator of “For the Love of Butterflies, Hummingbirds and Other Pollinators” on the Nextdoor App. For the last 3-4 years, he has propagated his plants and shared them with a local nursery that specializes in pollinator plants.

 

With the recent winter freezes, Tom’s garden (like all of ours) is dormant. But he is eager to see his garden flourishing again to invite back the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

If you stroll the grounds of the Clermont Garden Club at 849 West Ave in historic downtown Clermont, you will spy 2 new beautiful wooden benches in the gardens. The benches were made and gifted to the Clermont Garden Club by Brendon Fagan as part of his Eagle Scout project. Being an Eagle Scout is the highest rank in scouting, achieved by executing a significant service project in the community. Only 6% of Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Brendon Fagan, of Scout Troop #268, contacted the Clermont Garden Club about a year ago inquiring about projects he can do for the club. It was decided that the club could use a couple of outdoor benches for visitors to sit, relax, and enjoy the gardens. Brendon planned the project, purchased all materials, constructed 2 wooden benches and installed them on pavers on the grounds of the garden club. He demonstrated leadership and coordinate help from 4-5 other scouts. A total of 46 hours was needed for Brendon to complete this Eagle project.

The Clermont Garden Club is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization and is grateful for Brendon Fagan’s generous gift to the club.

Sue Randall loaned a calathea (of the family Marantaceae) to Clermont City Hall. The calathea prefers a warm humid environment, indirect sunlight and being planted in lightweight potting medium/organic matter at slightly acidic conditions. Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Keep the soil moist at all times, but avoid “wet feet”. Fertilize once a month during the growing season, and stop during the winter months. The leaves move throughout the day and fold up at night…only to reopen in the morning!
