Paul Ernandez’s great-grandson, Diego, was born with a health issue affecting his brain. Several of his blood vessels were entangled in his brain, a condition identified as AVM. The problem was not diagnosed for three years. Diego told his parents his “head really hurt”. He was experiencing chronic headaches.

The diagnosis meant brain surgery, and that could only happen at one of two children’s hospitals. The decision was to travel to Boston for the operation. In addition to the hospital costs and rehabilitation, the family would need to travel to and from Boston.

Tim Blevins, the Ambassador for South Lake Florida, put Paul in touch with George Palmer, E-VP of USSVCF, who arranged for needed financial support from the Brotherhood Fund. He also contacted the Boston Base to pay a visit and award Diego with a Kaps4Kidss presentation.

The operation was a success, and Diego returned home. He and his sister, Autum, and their family are grateful for the Submariner community’s support.

The South Lake Florida chapter also helped a high school graduate with a $500.00 donation. We are here to serve in our community.

For more than a decade, the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration hosted by Joe Holt and Lou Ellen Combs has been one of the most anticipated gatherings of the year. Family, Friends, and members of Beta Theta, ESA eagerly look forward to an afternoon filled with laughter, friendship, and festive fun.

The Holt/Comb’s  home is transformed into a colorful fiesta, bursting with vibrant decorations, and enough festive flair to make everyone feel as though they’ve stepped straight into a Mexican cantina. Bright colors, cheerful décor, and welcoming hospitality set the stage for am afternoon to remember.

Of course, no Cinco de Mayo celebration would be complete without delicious food, flowing tequila, and plenty of margaritas. Guests mingle, share stories, and celebrate the spirit of community that has made this tradition so special year after year.

Adding to the excitement, members of Beta Theta, ESA have also made the annual celebration the occasion for announcing the prestigious “Beta Theta Zeus” award. This highly honored distinction is presented to a man associated with Beta Theta who generously and unselfishly supports the women of the organization, helping make it easier for them to carry out their mission of service to the community. This year the well-deserved Zeus award was presented to “JOE HOLT”. 

The day is always filled with appreciation, camaraderie, and heartfelt recognition — proving once again that this beloved Cinco de Mayo tradition is about far more than tacos and tequila. It’s about friendship, service, and celebrating the people who make a difference behind the scenes.

Congratulations to Montverde Academy junior Aubrey Harry on winning the Congressional Art Competition, themed “Wonders of Florida,” for the 11th Congressional District.  

 Each spring, a nationwide high school art competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage artistic talent throughout in the nation. Since its inception in 1982, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition. 

Aubrey’s artwork will be prominently displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel that connects the Cannon House Office Building with the United States Capitol and is traveled daily by Members of Congress, their staff, and visitors.

Congratulations to the new officers installed at the May meeting!  Cindy Courtney and Patti Brainard-Co-Recording Secretaries, Linda Walsh-Treasurer, Nidia Alameda-2nd Vice President, Deborah Snow-1st Vice President, Patty Miller, President and Geneva Hamilton-Corresponding Secretary.  Marion DeAnnuntis, with the South Lake Junior Woman’s Club, was the Installing Officer.  This was CWC’s final meeting for the season.  They will resume regular monthly meetings in September.

The meaningful gathering focused on unity, faith, and community service while also raising funds to benefit Love Groveland, a local food bank serving families in need.

Special guest speaker Tim Moses delivered an inspiring message to attendees, encouraging faith, compassion, and community involvement.

The program also featured a performance by the East Ridge High School Chorus under the direction of Robert Walker. The talented students opened the event with a selection of songs that helped set a heartfelt and uplifting tone for the gathering.

Funds raised during the annual event were donated to Love Groveland to help support its ongoing mission of providing food assistance to local families experiencing hardship.

The annual Prayer Day event continues to be one of the Kiwanis Club of Clermont’s signature community gatherings, bringing residents together in a spirit of hope, unity, and service.

The Clermont Garden Club, 849 West Avenue, located on the shores of historical Center Lake Park in downtown Clermont, hosted its 8^th Annual Spring Garden Festival on Saturday, May 2^nd.

The festival was complete with vendors offering ornamental plants and exotic plants, such as medicinal herbs and beautiful orchids. The forty plus booths also offered growing tips for anything from everyday outdoor ornamental landscape plants to homegrown vegetable gardens that can provide herbicide and chemical-free nutrition to the family dinner table.

Many area residents are unaware of the beautiful clubhouse that is nestled under stately oak trees and surrounded by lush walking gardens that provide resting places and even homes to a wide variety of bird life, and beneficial insects such as lady bugs, bees, and hoverflies, all of which are helpful with pollination and pest control.

The club, which was established in 1948, celebrates 78 continuous years of community beautification and education this year. Club President Cindy Simon, who is a long-time member of the club, stated that the club is not only invested in the beauty and importance of nature and horticulture but also in the future of the environment and the youth that are destined to be a part of that interest and preservation process.

The club sponsors children in grades 3-6 to an annual youth camp located at Wekiwa State Park in Apopka. The one-week sleepover camp allows the children to experience nature hikes and trails while also gaining knowledge about wildlife animal track identification and plant identity- including ones that hurt, such as poison ivy.

The club also sponsors teenaged youth, grades 9-12, to a 3-day conference at the Saving Earths Environment through Knowledge (SEEK) program at Wekiwa Springs. SEEK is an educational experience sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and supported by the University of Florida. Youth get a chance to experience nature related field trips and workshops on critical environmental issues such as climate and water conservation.

The Clermont Garden Club continues to be an intricate part of the historical downtown Clermont area by offering walking garden tours and shows throughout the year. The club house is also available for rental and has been the site of beautiful weddings, anniversary party’s and any other social event that would embrace the natural grace that surrounds the cozy club house.

K-Kids is one of the largest service leadership programs for primary and elementary school age students, with over 22,000 members and 1,100 clubs worldwide. The first K-Kids was chartered in 2000.

Joining K-Kids means belonging to the Kiwanis family that engages more than 445,000 youth and adults globally from primary/elementary school through adulthood in service. Together, our family of clubs raise almost US$390 million each year.

K-Kids is a student-led club with members, officers, committee chairs and adult advisors. Clubs are in schools, youth organizations, libraries, congregations, and other community-based locations. The host school or organization provides a meeting space for the club and an adult advisor to guide its students. A local Kiwanis club often sponsors a K-Kids club, paying its fees and providing a volunteer Kiwanis advisor.

K-Kids follow the school/organization’s policies and Kiwanis International youth protection policies. The Kiwanis International staff in Indiana, USA, provides club program materials, opportunities for awards and contest, and training and support for club advisors.

Guests were treated to a lovely assortment of teas, accompanied by an array of freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches, and beautifully prepared desserts. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it easy to linger, sip, and savor every moment.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the dedicated committee whose hard work made the event such a success. Special congratulations to Co-Chairmen Judy Padoan and Ann Bonacki, along with committee members Patty, Linda, Helen, Carol, Christine, Kristy, Gladys, Sylvia, and Sonia. Their attention to detail and thoughtful planning created a truly memorable experience for all who attended.

The Clermont Woman’s Club, chartered in 1927, continues its long-standing tradition of service as a non-profit organization committed to supporting the community.
