The Clermont Garden Club, 849 West Avenue, located on the shores of historical Center Lake Park in downtown Clermont, hosted its 8th Annual Spring Garden Festival on Saturday, May 2nd.

The festival was complete with vendors offering ornamental plants and exotic plants, such as medicinal herbs and beautiful orchids. The forty plus booths also offered growing tips for anything from everyday outdoor ornamental landscape plants to homegrown vegetable gardens that can provide herbicide and chemical-free nutrition to the family dinner table.

Many area residents are unaware of the beautiful clubhouse that is nestled under stately oak trees and surrounded by lush walking gardens that provide resting places and even homes to a wide variety of bird life, and beneficial insects such as lady bugs, bees, and hoverflies, all of which are helpful with pollination and pest control.

The club, which was established in 1948, celebrates 78 continuous years of community beautification and education this year. Club President Cindy Simon, who is a long-time member of the club, stated that the club is not only invested in the beauty and importance of nature and horticulture but also in the future of the environment and the youth that are destined to be a part of that interest and preservation process.

The club sponsors children in grades 3-6 to an annual youth camp located at Wekiwa State Park in Apopka. The one-week sleepover camp allows the children to experience nature hikes and trails while also gaining knowledge about wildlife animal track identification and plant identity- including ones that hurt, such as poison ivy.

The club also sponsors teenaged youth, grades 9-12, to a 3-day conference at the Saving Earths Environment through Knowledge (SEEK) program at Wekiwa Springs. SEEK is an educational experience sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and supported by the University of Florida. Youth get a chance to experience nature related field trips and workshops on critical environmental issues such as climate and water conservation.

The Clermont Garden Club continues to be an intricate part of the historical downtown Clermont area by offering walking garden tours and shows throughout the year. The club house is also available for rental and has been the site of beautiful weddings, anniversary party’s and any other social event that would embrace the natural grace that surrounds the cozy club house.

K-Kids is one of the largest service leadership programs for primary and elementary school age students, with over 22,000 members and 1,100 clubs worldwide. The first K-Kids was chartered in 2000.

Joining K-Kids means belonging to the Kiwanis family that engages more than 445,000 youth and adults globally from primary/elementary school through adulthood in service. Together, our family of clubs raise almost US$390 million each year.

K-Kids is a student-led club with members, officers, committee chairs and adult advisors. Clubs are in schools, youth organizations, libraries, congregations, and other community-based locations. The host school or organization provides a meeting space for the club and an adult advisor to guide its students. A local Kiwanis club often sponsors a K-Kids club, paying its fees and providing a volunteer Kiwanis advisor.

K-Kids follow the school/organization’s policies and Kiwanis International youth protection policies. The Kiwanis International staff in Indiana, USA, provides club program materials, opportunities for awards and contest, and training and support for club advisors.

If you have never visited Clermont’s Historic Village or, if it has been a long time since you visited, you may want to make plans to go there soon. There have been some big changes to the display in one of the buildings and more changes around the Village are in the works.

For the past few months some dedicated volunteers have been working tirelessly to redo the display in the World War II Quonset hut. Most of the printed material that was on the shelves in the lighted cases has been digitized and the originals are now stored in archival boxes. Copies of those materials and other items are now on a new vertical display. Also on vertical display are several interesting photographs of individuals and events from the war.

So, what happened to the space freed up when the print material was removed? A lot of interesting items that had been stored in trunks in the Quonset hut including quite a few items brought home from Germany after the war by our returning troops are now out for visitors to see.

With the recent winter freezes, everyone’s garden is probably struggling now to get back to its former glory. The Clermont Garden Club’s clubhouse grounds at 849 West Ave., Clermont is no exception. While we wait for many plants to return (like the hibiscus, jatropha, crotons), we marvel at the resilience of other plants that have bounced back. We are also indebted to the forethought of wise, past club groundskeepers who knew that plant diversification is the key to having a healthy garden at various times throughout the year. For this reason, we have chosen the grounds of the Clermont Garden Club as the Yard of the Month for April 2026.

The front walk of the property at 849 West Ave., Clermont is shaded by a beautiful oak tree. The tree’s sturdy branch is adorned by a large Staghorn fern (Platycerium), which is a unique epiphytic plant known for its antler-like fronds. Rob Farmer, club member Grounds Lead, is credited with wrapping the Staghorn fern during the latest freezing temps and adequately protecting this precious plant. The rest of the garden is sprinkled with various colors from the blue cluster flowers of the Plumbago auriculata, yellow flowers of the African iris (Dietes bicolor), pale purple of flowering plants in the mint family, and the striking pinks and reds of many bromeliads throughout the garden (such as Bromeliad Neoregelia and Aechmea gamosepala, also known as the matchstick bromeliad). The most striking color this time of the year, however, goes to the amaryllis or Barbados lily (Hippeastrum vittatum) which line the north side of the clubhouse leading into the back yard and gazebo. These gorgeous amaryllis plants have trumpet-like blooms of red-orange petals with white center stripes…giving them the appearance of stars.

The clubhouse at 849 West Ave., Clermont is available for rental at very reasonable rates. Available for your use during your rental are the clubhouse (complete with table/chairs, kitchen and 2 restrooms), the outdoor paved patio and gazebo on the beautiful garden grounds.
