The summer heat arrived early for this week’s Clermont Waterfront parkrun at Lake Hiawatha Preserve as 140 runners and walkers gathered for the 7:30am start on a warm and muggy and what felt like 79-degree Saturday morning. Despite the sticky conditions, the energy around the lake remained high as another strong community turnout filled the trail with familiar Clermont Triathlon Club faces, some first-timers, volunteers, and post-run conversations under the warm Lake County sun.

Jeremy Arguelles and Todd Fedorovich

Leading the field this morning was Mascotte resident Jeremy Arguelles, who cruised to an impressive 18:04 victory in his 174th parkrun appearance. Arguelles, a former professional duathlete who now works for Advent Health in Orlando, handled the difficult conditions with experience and composure, separating himself & one other unknown runner early on the scenic waterfront course.

The women were once again paced by Lexi Whitehead, who stopped the clock in 22:22. The East Ridge Knight standout continues to show excellent form following a tremendous prep track season, using today’s effort as a controlled off-season tempo run while still comfortably topping the women’s field.

Today’s featured parkrunner was longtime Clermont parkrun staple Rissi Thieler. Rissi has completed more than 276 parkruns while also volunteering well over 200 times, making her one of the foundational members of the local parkrun community.

Tony Aseere, Rissi Thieler, Jeff Stamborski

When asked about her history with parkrun, Rissi reflected on how deeply connected she has been to the event since the beginning.

“My first parkrun was in April of 2013. This was the very first Clermont parkrun started by Karen and Tim Bowler,” she shared.

Her most memorable day came during her milestone 250th parkrun, though she admitted the exact date escapes her now (January 2025). More than personal achievements, Rissi emphasized the community aspect that keeps her returning each Saturday morning.

“I enjoy socializing with the other runners. I enjoy volunteering,” she said, noting she has accumulated roughly 213 volunteer credits along the way.

For newcomers to parkrun, her advice was simple and encouraging: “Enjoy the event and see what you can accomplish.”

Rissi Thieler and daghter Cherise Cardwell

Rissi also spoke about the importance of staying active both physically and mentally, explaining how running, walking, and swimming have helped her through both good times and difficult periods in life. Athletics clearly run in the family as well.

“All my kids run and also my grandkids. It’s a family affair that we’ve enjoyed together.”

After more than a decade involved with Clermont parkrun, her closing thoughts summed up what the weekly event has become for many in the local community.

“Clermont parkrun means a lot to me personally as I’ve been active in it since the very beginning here in Clermont.”

With summer conditions beginning to settle into Central Florida, this morning’s event once again proved that Clermont’s parkrun community continues to thrive thanks to dedicated volunteers, welcoming regulars, and runners of all abilities showing up week after week along the lakefront trail.

The Clermont Police Department (CPD) held its bi-monthly Coffee with a Cop, a community relations event, on Wednesday, May 20 at SevenMade, 685 Seventh Street, Clermont. Coffee with a Cop is a program designed to enhance community member relationship with law enforcement officers and the citizens of the communities that they serve. Businesses throughout the area often host the Coffee with a Cop program to exhibit not only support of the community but also support of the local first responders in the community. It also provides a neutral location for real conversations about issues that matter.

Sgt. Erin Razo, the department’s Community Relations Supervisor, announced that the department’s annual summer youth-related activities are planned and set to go beginning in June. The CPD has had a long tradition of summer programs that enhance interaction with youth and young adults.

Some campus environments may cause students to feel like they’re in a minority group, due to their faith and beliefs. They may feel ashamed or embarrassed on campus. At FCA Camp, our students are surrounded by other faith-filled athletes, and that environment encourages them to explore their faith as well as to go deeper in their personal relationship with Christ.”

Lake County’s fertilizer blackout period begins on Monday, June 1. The fertilizer ordinance, aimed at improving water quality, prohibits using fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus from June 1 through Sept. 30.

The ordinance also prohibits fertilizer use whenever soil is saturated or the National Weather Service forecasts heavy rain within 24 hours.

To protect public health, additional fertilizer restrictions apply:

Use a deflector shield during application to keep fertilizer off impermeable surfaces.

Don’t apply within 15 feet of a wetland or water body and leave a 15-foot low-maintenance buffer zone from any water body.

When applying Oct. 1 through May 31, products should contain at least 50% slow-release nitrogen and 0% phosphorus.

Always remember: “Only Rain Down the Storm Drain!” Do not rinse fertilizer, chemicals, grass, or yard clippings into storm drains. Help protect Lake County’s beautiful lakes.

The Class of 2026 earned $4.6 million in academic scholarships and included 42 Distinguished Scholars and 37 Cum Laude Society inductees, including the valedictorian and salutatorian.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Mr. Jon Hopman, Head of School, welcomed those in attendance and invited Mr. David Bernatavitz, Assistant Head of School for Upper School and Student Affairs, to introduce salutatorian Cobi Wu, who delivered the welcome address to the Class of 2026.

Cobi has been a student at Montverde Academy since eighth grade. During his time in the Upper School, he completed 12 Advanced Placement courses, earned recognition as a Distinguished Scholar, and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction.

A student-athlete on the successful MVA swim team, Cobi holds multiple school records and national-level qualifications and is a former age-group state record holder. He also served as head of the Disciplinary Committee, a Prefect, and a member of the Head of School Student Advisory Committee, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, French Honor Society, and Cum Laude Society.

Cobi will attend the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, this fall, where he plans to major in mechanical engineering while competing on the university’s varsity swim team. In his address, he encouraged the Class of 2026 to enjoy the moment and appreciate not only life’s major milestones but also the ordinary moments.

“So the next time you spill a cup of water at lunch,” he told his classmates, “I hope you see more than just a mess. I hope you see a moment—a moment of goofiness that one day you look back upon and smile.”

Mr. Hopman then presented the H.P. Carpenter Award to Adam Townsend. Named in honor of Mr. H.P. Carpenter, who, along with his wife, founded Montverde Academy in 1912, the award recognizes the senior whose contributions and performance have had a significant impact on the life of the school.

Mr. Hopman also presented the Dalton P. Monroe Award to Addyson Thomas. Dalton Monroe served as a houseparent and mentor to many students during his tenure at the Academy. The award is presented to a senior who maintains a positive outlook and sense of humor despite adversity and who has overcome challenges to achieve success at MVA.

Valedictorian Michelle Su then addressed the Class of 2026.

Michelle has attended Montverde Academy for the past six years. A Distinguished Scholar, she completed 12 AP courses, earned National Merit status, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and is a member of the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society. She maintained a 4.54 GPA and earned an A+ in all of her courses at MVA.

Michelle also served as captain of the varsity golf team that won the 2024 Florida Class 1A State Championship. In addition, she is an athlete at the International Junior Golf Academy, a member of the Chinese Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and served on both the Head of School Student Advisory Committee and the Arts and Athletics Leadership Committee.

This fall, Michelle will attend Wellesley College, where she plans to double major in economics and psychology while competing in Division III golf. In her address, she thanked last year’s valedictorian, Madeline Xie, whom she described as her greatest role model and mentor.

“What I want to encourage you all to do is to seek out mentors,” she told the class. “As Mr. B once said in a character session at IJGA about the importance of mentorship, ‘Surround yourself with the people that can bring out the best of you.’”

Following her remarks, Mr. Hopman presented the Roger R. Ross Head of School Award to Jacob Novis. Named in honor of Roger R. Ross, who served as Dean of the Upper School from 2000 until his passing in 2014, the award is presented on behalf of the nine Heads of School who have served Montverde Academy since its founding in 1912. It recognizes the student who has achieved exceptional excellence in academics and extracurricular activities while maintaining the highest standards of character.

Mrs. Renee Stephens Lundy, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, then presented the Trustee’s Leadership Award to Lyder Reksten. The award honors a student who has attended Montverde Academy for at least two years, demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities, served the school community with distinction, and exemplified integrity, loyalty, and character.

Dr. Akshay Naraine ’13 then delivered the keynote address to the Class of 2026. During his time at MVA, Dr. Naraine distinguished himself not only as an exceptional student but also as a leader among his peers. At age 29, he became one of the youngest professors appointed in the 60-year history of Nova Southeastern University.

Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Naraine completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropharmacology at the renowned Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He has received numerous honors, including the Nicholson Exchange Scholar Award from the Karolinska Institute and Rockefeller University, the Wenner-Gren Postdoctoral Fellowship, and Nova Southeastern University’s President’s Research Grant. Whether working with university students, engaging with the community, or mentoring young researchers, he embodies the spirit of leadership through service and discovery.

Following the keynote address, Mr. Hopman presented the Old, Vintage, and Ancient Guard Awards to students who have attended Montverde Academy for many years.

Old Guard recipients, recognized for seven years at MVA, included Oliver Anderson, John Drawdy, Daniel Garcia, Thalia Paris, Michelle Su, and Addyson Thomas.

Vintage Guard recipients, recognized for eight to 10 years at MVA, included Ryan Sapp (eight years), Jess Barnhill (nine years), and Nishchay Bhattarai (10 years).

Ancient Guard recipients, recognized for 11 to 15 years at MVA, included Nybia Rivera-Alvarez (11 years); Ashlyn Anderson, Charlotte Newton, and Aria Sallin (12 years); Paolo de Fabrique Saint Tours, Sara Maria Echavarria, and Aaron Kaufman (13 years); and Tatriana Hinds, Dhani Miller, Raymon Ozols-Szoke, Koryn Scott, and Christopher Wathington (14 years).

Mrs. Meristell Shackelford, Dean of the Lower School, presented the final Ancient Guard Awards to students who have attended Montverde Academy since Pre-K3 — a remarkable 15 years. Those recipients included Titus DeClercq, Carington Helms, Brayden Long, Brooke Pacheco, Lucas Paez, Isabella Castro, Christopher Russo, and Audrey Schmiechen-Patterson.

The Music Conservatory Senior Ensemble then performed “A Million Dreams” before Mr. Hopman presented diplomas to the Class of 2026. Senior Class President Lyder Reksten led the graduates in the traditional tassel ceremony, and the Concert Choir Ensemble joined MVA alumni on stage to lead the singing of the school’s alma mater.

The ceremony concluded with Montverde Academy’s traditional benediction from around the world. This year, the phrase “May blessings follow us as we depart one from another” was spoken in 33 different languages. Lyder Reksten then led the graduates in the ceremonial tossing of caps, while Mrs. Mary Mincy, piano instructor, performed “Prelude to the Dance” by David Lanz for the recessional.

Congratulations to the 113th graduating class and Montverde Academy’s newest alumni.

As Dash Sports celebrates its 20th anniversary, owner Kimberly Grogan is reflecting on the journey that transformed a small 400-square-foot store in the NTC into a beloved business rooted in community, perseverance, and passion.

Looking back on those early days, Kimberly remembers the fear and uncertainty that came with taking such a big leap. One of the very first inventory purchases — a $500 order of Timex watches — felt enormous for the tiny shop just getting started. In those days, her young son Gavin would often nap in the back room while she worked tirelessly to build the business. Today, Gavin stands 6’1”, serving as a reminder of just how much time, dedication, and life have grown alongside the store.

Over the past two decades, Dash Sports has become more than just a retail shop. Kimberly credits the many incredible employees who helped shape the business into what it is today, along with the countless customers who became lifelong friends along the way.

The journey was filled with long nights rearranging merchandise to maximize every inch of space, counting inventory, learning new systems, adapting to evolving technology, and constantly striving to improve. Through every challenge, Kimberly remained committed to creating a welcoming and trusted place for runners, walkers, and athletes alike.

One particularly meaningful moment came at 5 am on October 10, 2024, when Kimberly sat at her kitchen table sketching and measuring fixtures for the new Winter Garden location — a dream milestone for any retail store owner.

Despite the hard work and sleepless nights, Kimberly says she would not trade the experience for anything.

The business, she shared, gave her the opportunity to live the life she always wanted — balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship while building a career she truly loves.

Kimberly also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the customers who have supported Dash Sports throughout the years by trusting the team with their feet, fitness goals, and continued loyalty. She says there is still joy in opening new inventory, helping customers find the perfect shoes, and working alongside a dedicated team each day.

Most importantly, Kimberly credits her faith for guiding her path over the last 20 years and for continuing to bless the work that brings her such fulfillment.

South Lake Regional Park is now officially open — and it is already proving to be one of South Lake County’s premier destinations for sports, recreation, and community gatherings.

The stunning new facility is the result of years of collaboration between the City of Groveland and Lake County, with leaders praising the teamwork and dedication that transformed the vision into reality.

Community leaders reflected on how meaningful it was to see generations of families enjoying the beautiful May evening together at the ballpark.

And this is only the beginning.

The newly opened complex represents Phase 1 of the larger vision for South Lake Regional Park, with additional improvements already planned — including a new traffic signal at Highway 50 and Max Hooks Road expected within the next four months to improve access and traffic flow.

The massive sports complex features 11 sports fields, including baseball, softball, cricket, football, soccer, tee-ball, and multi-purpose fields. The facility will include dugouts, shaded bleachers, scoreboards, batting cages, concession stands, walking trails, volleyball courts, picnic areas, pavilions, bike racks, and ADA-accessible amenities designed to welcome visitors of all ages and abilities.

Families visiting the park can also enjoy restrooms, picnic tables, shaded gathering areas, and plenty of open space for recreation and relaxation.

City and county leaders took time during the event to thank the contractors, staff members, volunteers, and families whose hard work helped bring the project to life.

South Lake Regional Park is already becoming much more than just a sports complex — it is quickly growing into a centerpiece for community connection, youth athletics, and family entertainment throughout South Lake County.

The nonprofit will host its two-day “Something Blue” Bridal Showcase at its Clermont location, offering affordable wedding attire and accessories while supporting job training and employment programs across Central Florida.

Brides-to-be, grooms, and members of the wedding party are invited to shop a wide selection of wedding gowns — many priced under $100 — along with tuxedos, suits, shoes, and accessories during the special event on May 30 and 31.

In addition to shopping, Goodwill is encouraging Central Floridians to donate their “something old” wedding items so other couples can give them new life and create lasting memories of their own.

Every donation and purchase made at Goodwill helps fund the organization’s hands-on job training and employment assistance programs, which provide opportunities for individuals seeking meaningful employment and greater economic independence.
