The right to vote and have your voice heard should never be taken for granted. Every vote matters, and every voter has a responsibility to make informed decisions.

Get your facts straight. Vote based on facts, not opinions. Take the time to research the candidates, understand the issues, and consider the long-term consequences of your choices.

As difficult as it may be, cast your vote with the greater good of our country in mind, not just your personal interests.

For example, lowering taxes may sound appealing, but consider the bigger picture. If taxes are reduced or remain unchanged, how might that affect the services your community depends on, such as public safety, schools, roads, and other essential services?

Also, remember that not every problem is local. Some challenges are global in nature and cannot be solved by your community alone.

Before you cast your ballot, think critically, look beyond the headlines, and consider the facts. An informed voter is an empowered voter, and a thoughtful vote can help shape a better future for everyone.

Educate yourself on politics, the voting process, the candidates and the issues.

“For eight years, we have been proud to offer complimentary passport photos to our veterans and military personnel during the month of November,” said Gary Cooney, Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller. “The sacrifices made by those who serve our country deserve our deepest appreciation. Providing this service is just a small token of that appreciation.”

Since starting the veterans’ appreciation event in 2019, 464 veterans have been provided free photos. To be eligible for the free photo, military personnel can present their DD-214, military identification, or have a veteran designation on their driver’s license.

Passports in Lake County are currently being processed by appointment at the following locations:

• Lake County Courthouse, 550 W. Main St., North Wing – Third Floor, Tavares
• North Lake Branch Office, 902 Avenida Central, The Villages
• South Lake Branch Office, 290 Citrus Tower Blvd., Suite 116, Clermont

The popular Halloween-themed event offers participants a chance to enjoy a scenic course around Silver Lake while supporting Lake-Sumter State College students and important College initiatives. Whether racing for a personal best, taking a leisurely walk, or simply cheering from the sidelines, attendees can expect a morning filled with fun, fitness and community spirit.

Race day registration opens at 6:30 am, with the race beginning at 8 am on the College’s Leesburg Campus. The course starts on College Drive and winds around picturesque Silver Lake.

Participants who register will receive an event T-shirt and commemorative medal, with shirts and medals guaranteed for those who register on or before Oct. 16, 2026.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, participants are encouraged to show off their Halloween creativity. Trophies will be awarded to the top three overall costume entries, making the Monster Dash as much a costume celebration as it is a race.

Proceeds from the event directly benefit Lake-Sumter State College students and College programs, helping advance educational opportunities throughout the community.

Community members who are not planning to run or walk can still get involved by volunteering to assist with race-day activities. Registration is now open, and organizers encourage participants to secure their spot early for one of the area’s most anticipated Halloween events.

Central Florida Dreamplex has been awarded $15,640 through the Orlando Health Community Grant Program for the 2026–2027 grant year. The funding will support the organization’s Speech Therapy Feeding Program Support Initiative, strengthening specialized feeding therapy services for children with disabilities, special needs, and developmental challenges throughout Central Florida.

This award marks a milestone for Dreamplex as the organization continues expanding its relationships with healthcare institutions and community partners committed to improving the lives of individuals with all disabilities.

Feeding challenges can affect a child’s daily routines and a family’s experience at mealtimes. Specialized feeding therapy helps children practice feeding skills and provides support tailored to their individual needs.

“This partnership with Orlando Health represents so much more than financial support,” said Cameron Gomes, CEO of Central Florida Dreamplex. “It reflects a shared commitment to helping our children overcome barriers, develop independence, and experience a better quality of life. Montverde Academy’s Middle School has welcomed its newest members of the Honor Council for the 2026-27 school year. As student leaders, Honor Council members play an important role in fostering a positive and respectful Middle School community. 

The Honor Council takes a proactive approach to helping students navigate challenges and encourage a culture built on honesty, mutual respect, and personal responsibility. Members promote the importance of telling the truth, honoring relationships, respecting others’ belongings and personal space, and recognizing each student’s right to express their thoughts and opinions. 

 At their first meeting of the school year, Honor Council members had the opportunity to get acquainted with one another, review the Honor Council Constitution, and elect their student officers. 

 Seventh grader Anika Pitolwala was elected as president, and eighth grader Anika Gupta was elected secretary.

The partnership comes as residents prepare for the end of Daylight Saving Time and turn their clocks “back” one hour (remember: Spring Ahead; Fall Back). The twice-a-year ritual of changing clocks provides an important reminder for residents to test the smoke detectors in their homes, check batteries, and make sure each device is functioning properly.

“Safety is who we are at Lake Apopka Natural Gas District, and that commitment goes well beyond the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas,” Brent E. Haywood, P.E., General Manager and CEO of Lake Apopka Natural Gas District said. “By partnering with the City of Clermont and its Fire Department, we have an opportunity to put potentially lifesaving equipment directly into residents’ homes. We hope this donation also encourages every family to take a few minutes when they change their clocks to make sure the smoke detectors in their home are ready to protect them.”

The donation is part of a broader District community safety initiative with fire departments in the cities of Clermont and Apopka, with each receiving 100 to provide to their residents. Working smoke detectors provide critical early warning during a residential fire, giving occupants additional time to safely escape. The Clermont Fire Department encourages residents to routinely test their smoke alarms and follow manufacturer recommendations regarding batteries and replacement of older devices.

“A working smoke alarm can make a tremendous difference when a fire occurs because every second matters,” said David Ezell, Clermont Fire Chief. “This donation will allow our department to get smoke detectors into the hands of residents who can benefit from them. We thank Lake Apopka Natural Gas District for partnering with us and helping reinforce a simple but important message: test your alarms, make sure they are working and never take fire safety for granted.”

The Clermont Fire Department operates five stations and provides fire suppression, emergency medical response, fire prevention, safety education, and other emergency services to the Clermont community. The department responded to more than 8,500 calls for service in 2025.

For the District, the initiative builds upon its longstanding emphasis on safety for its employees, customers and communities. In addition to maintaining a safe and reliable natural gas distribution system, the District works with local governments, first responders and community organizations to promote public awareness and support programs that enhance quality of life throughout its service area.

Residents should use the changing of the clocks each spring and fall as a recurring reminder to:

• Test every smoke detector in the home to ensure it is working properly;
• Check batteries and replace them when necessary;
• Make sure smoke detectors are installed in appropriate locations throughout the home;
• Replace smoke detectors according to manufacturer recommendations; and
• Review the household’s fire escape plan and make sure everyone knows how to safely exit the home in an emergency.
