by Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky

This Hanukkah, Lake County is seeing a surge in public displays of the holiday and Jewish identity, with many more families and individuals planning to light their menorahs in visible places, such as their doors or windows. Chabad of S. Lake County will light a public menorah made out of lego at Waterfront Park in Clermont, followed by a community celebration on December 29th, the fifth night of Hanukkah.

“At this fraught time for the Jewish community, with war in Israel and American Jews facing a major rise in antisemitism, this year we are doing more to celebrate Hanukkah with joy and Jewish pride,” said Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky. “The Menorah and Hanukkah represent freedom of the human spirit, freedom from tyranny and oppression, and of the victory of good over evil.”

The ceremony will feature a menorah lighting and an array of entertainment for all ages including a helicopter gelt drop and an acrobat show, as well as drinks and a selection of traditional Hanukkah foods. Throughout the state of Florida, Chabad-Lubavitch will be presenting dozens of Hanukkah events and celebrations, including public menorah lightings, ice menorah displays, car-top menorah parades, community gatherings, giant dreidel houses, Chanukah Wonderlands and more.

This year’s celebrations carry added significance as they mark 50 years since the first public menorah which was lit at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia in 1974. The public menorah was lit after the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory, launched the worldwide Hanukkah campaign in 1973 to build awareness and promote the observance of Hanukkah. Today, public menorahs and Hanukkah displays have become a staple of Jewish cultural and American public life, forever altering the American practice and perception of the festival.

This year’s Hanukkah campaign will be one of unprecedented light and joy, seeing Chabad reach more than 8 million Jews in more than 100 countries. Clermont’s menorah is one of over 15,000 large public menorahs throughout the world, including notable menorahs in front of the White House, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the St. Louis Arch, the Great Wall of China, and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.

“Celebrating Hanukkah is a potent point of light, Jewish pride and confidence for American Jews in the fight against darkness and antisemitism,” added Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky. “The celebration of Hanukkah underscores the G-d endowed liberty that is at the heart of what America represents.”

The Grand Chanukah Celebration will be held at Waterfront Park, Clermont on Sunday, December 29th at 4:30 pm. It’s free to the entire community.

ABOUT HANUKKAH

Hanukkah, the 8-day Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Wednesday, December 25, and concludes on Thursday, Jan, 2 at nightfall. It recalls the victory of the militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people, who defeated the Syrian-Greeks who had sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and practice, desecrating the Holy Temple and the oil prepared for the daily lighting of the menorah.

Upon recapturing the Temple, only one jar of undefiled oil—enough to burn for one day—was found, but it lasted miraculously for eight days. In commemoration, Jews light an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah, adding another candle each night. The holiday carries a universal message of the triumph of freedom over oppression and light over darkness.

With Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, beginning at sunset on Wednesday, October 2 and concluding after nightfall on Friday, October 4, Chabad of S. Lake County is offering free High Holiday synagogue services to ensure that everyone has a place to pray.

Recognizing the often high price tag attached to synagogue seats during the High Holidays and the tough economic situation many families are facing, Chabad of S. Lake County is opening its doors wide and inviting all Lake County’s Jews to attend at no cost and participate in a meaningful celebration of the Jewish New Year.

Chabad-Lubavitch — today, the world’s largest and fast-growing Jewish organization — has for decades championed the belief that Judaism belongs to every Jew, and it should be accessible to all. By embodying this ethos, Chabad has made High Holiday services available free of charge, a model other synagogues and movements around the world are beginning to emulate.

Chabad’s user-friendly services and warm inclusive environment make for an enjoyable and meaningful experience, suitable for the beginner and the advanced. Utilizing traditional tunes and songs, commentary and bilingual prayer-books, Chabad engages individuals of all levels as active participants in the service.

“The Rebbe — Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, the most influential rabbi in modern history, who is credited with orchestrating a post-Holocaust Jewish renaissance — insisted that Judaism be accessible and welcoming to all Jews,” noted Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky. “We strive to actualize that vision with an inclusive nonjudgmental atmosphere, affordable services and ensuring ease for beginners to follow along.”

“Jewish tradition teaches us that on the New Year, the gates of Heaven are open and G‑d hears all prayers,” adds Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky, director of Chabad of S. Lake County. “We must keep our doors and hearts open to all as well.”

About the High Holidays

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins this year at sundown on Wednesday, October 2-4. Meaning “head of the year,” the two-day holiday commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in theYom Kippur holiday, this year October 11-12. The shofar is the central ritual of the Rosh Hashanah synagogue service. Yom Kippur—the Day of Atonement—is considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. The holiday is observed by fasting and prayers and according to tradition, G‑d decides each person’s fate on this day.

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Sunday, November 28 and concludes the evening of Monday, December 6. It recalls the victory of a militarily weak Jewish people who defeated the Syrian Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and prohibit religious freedom. They also desecrated and defiled the Temple and the oils prepared for the lighting of the menorah, which was part of the daily service.

Upon recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn only one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight. In commemoration, Jews celebrate Hanukkah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah. Today, people of all faiths consider the holiday a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness.

Chabad of S. Lake County will ignite a public 9 foot Hanukkah menorah erected at Waterfront Park, followed by a community-wide celebration on November 28th, the 1st night of the eight-day holiday. The ceremony, organized by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky, will feature a firetruck gelt drop, a Kosher food truck all the way from Jacksonville and special dignitaries. After the gelt drop we will have a menorah lighting ceremony where we will dance, sing and eat the night away, followed by the most spectacular ‘African High Flyers’ as seen on ‘America’s Got Talent!’

“The menorah serves as a symbol of Lake County’s dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship G‑d freely, openly, and with pride. This is true especially in America, a nation that was founded upon and vigorously protects the right of every person to practice his or her religion free from restraint and persecution,” said Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky.

“I want my kids to grow up with pride in their Jewish heritage and a feeling of equality and self-confidence as Americans” said Denise Febres of Minneola, who is looking forward to attending the public menorah lighting. “Chabad Lubavitch’s Hanukkah menorahs are arguably one of the most important developments ever to help my child’s education. I wish they had this where I grew up.”

The Menorah lighting is part of the worldwide Hanukkah campaign, an initiative launched by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, in 1973. The campaign highlights and encourages the central theme of the holiday — publicizing the story of the Hanukkah miracle.

“The message of Hanukkah is the message of light,” added Rabbi Dubinsky. “The nature of light is that it is always victorious over darkness. A small amount of light dispels a lot of darkness. Another act of goodness and kindness, another act of light, can make all the difference.”

Today, the unprecedented public display of Hanukkah has become a staple of Jewish cultural and religious life, forever altering the American practice and awareness of the festival. Clermont’s menorah is one of more than 15,000 large public menorahs sponsored by Chabad in more than 100 countries around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, the Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin, helping children and adults of all walks of life discover and enjoy the holiday message

Throughout the State of Florida, Chabad will be presenting dozens of Hanukkah events and celebrations, including public Menorah Lightings,
