The City of Mascotte proudly hosted its 2nd Annual Black History Program, bringing the community together to celebrate culture, history, and progress. The event, organized by City Manager Annamarie Reno, along with Desery Benjamin and Darlene Benjamin, was a heartfelt tribute to the significance of Black history and its impact on future generations.

Inspirational Speakers

The event featured speeches from esteemed local leaders, each delivering powerful messages of motivation and empowerment:

• 

  Vice Mayor Barbara Gains inspired attendees with the words, “Inspire Future Generations to build brighter for a more equitable future for all.”

• Chief Chuck Broadway challenged the audience with the thought-provoking question, “What is the change and what are we going to do about it?”
  
• Mascotte City Councilwoman Robin Hughes emphasized the power of self-belief, stating, “The key to success is first to achieve it in your mind and the body is sure to follow.  The color of your skin does not establish limitations.”

Cultural Entertainment & Vendors

The program also showcased a special performance by the RIF Dancers of RIF Elite Academy from Orlando, under the direction of Takayah Norris. Their dynamic performance added an artistic and cultural depth to the celebration.

The City of Mascotte opened a year-long celebration in honor of the city’s 100th birthday on Saturday, January 19^th. The Centennial celebration began with a parade at 10 am with Illa Mae Thomas as the Grand Marshall. Mrs. Thomas has been a lifelong resident of Mascotte, growing up and residing on North Sunset Avenue her entire life. Mrs. Thomas reflected with a smile on her attendance at the 50^th, 75^th, and now the 100^th year celebration of a town that she has seen grow so much during her lifetime. Mrs. Thomas’ husband, Fred Thomas, served as the Mayor of Mascotte for nearly a quarter of a century with his first term beginning in 1958.

The celebration continued with a “Mascotte in the Past” celebration at the Mascotte Civic Center on North Sunset Avenue. The celebration kicked off with a welcome message from Mayor Steven Sheffield. In his presentation, Mayor Sheffield shared a reflection on the rich history of the city. “One hundred years ago, Mascotte was founded with a vision of creating a place where families could grow, businesses could thrive, and neighbors could support one another. Over the decades, we’ve seen our city evolve, adapting to the changing times while holding tight to the values that have made us who we are today – community, resilience, and a deep love for our beautiful Florida surroundings,” said Sheffield.

Entertainment for all ages included displays with local vendors, along with trackless train rides around the complex. Bounce houses, petting zoos, interactive performers provided by Orlando Youth Circus, and face painting booths surrounded the pavilion that provided a historical glimpse of yesteryear Mascotte. Public safety displays included the Lake County Fire Department’s “Randy” fire engine, affectionately named in honor of longtime Mascotte Fire Chief Randy Brasher.

Along with plenty of food options and games for all ages, the crowd was entertained by theAmerican Bombshells, a trio of singers who perform USO-style shows for the military, veterans, and first responders. The Bombshells not only provide great entertainment, but the non-profit organization also provides programs that provide service dogs for veterans with PTSD, suit drives for transitioning veterans, and many other services to our Nations heroes.

The year-long celebration, which includes the unveiling of a new city logo designed by Sasha Grossi, Mascotte Assistant City Clerk, will consist of two more festivities planned for June 21^st  with a theme of “Mascotte in the Present” and November 18^th as “Mascotte in the Future”.

The Parade: A Grand Kickoff

On February 25, the City of Mascotte Police Department (MPD) held their Coffee with a Cop event and introduced the new City Manager at the Rainbow Family Restaurant, located at 704 E Myers Blvd, Mascotte.  The event went from 9 am. to 11 am.  Those present had many good things to say about the City of Mascotte Police Department. Mascotte Police Officer Kenia Abreu acted as the host.  Linda Johnson the owner of The Rainbow Family Restaurant ensured that everyone was well fed and served. This is the latest in an ongoing series of outreach meetings presented by Mascotte.

Many of the MPD officers including Chief Eric Pedersen were present.  New City Manager, Annamarie Reno was also in attendance and was introduced to members of the community attending.  She commented, “so many times, at the administrative level we only hear complaints.  It was a pleasure to meet with so many Mascotte citizens and hear their stories of how well they feel our Police Department is doing.  I look forward to getting out in the community and meeting more of our citizens.”

Pam Jones, community relations representative from US Representative Daniel Webster’s office, David Colby CEO and president of the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, former mayor Barbara Krull and other community leaders were also in attendance.  The City Council was further represented by former council person Sally Rayman and current member Ellen Cruz along with local business owner Roy Cruz. Other people attending the successful turnout were Pastor Feliz Ramirez – La Primera Iglesia Bautista de Mascotte, Chaplain Darrell Sheeley – Bay Lake Baptist Church, Pastor José B Mejia – Iglesia Pentecostal Jesus es mi Redentor,  Delrita Meisner, Executive Director of Be Free Lake,  Mr. & Mrs. Thurling – Groveland Motel,  Heidi Manaf – T-Mobile Home Expert,  Monica Gamez – Los Compadres Meat Market.
