Guest speaker Jon Hopman, Head of School for the Montverde Academy detailed his life experiences as the son of a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent. Hopman’s travels as a child included a stay at the United States embassy located in Tanzania, a country located in East Africa. While there, Hopman learned respect and gratitude for the United States military personnel stationed at the embassy.

The Change of Command ceremony officially turned the reigns of the Battalion from outgoing Command Chief Kurt Schindele, to the incoming Command Chief Joseph “Joey” Walter.

Several years ago, an award was created in honor of Clermont Police Chief Charles Broadway.   Each year this award is presented to the cadet who exemplifies the Chief’s commitment to leadership and excellence in service to their team.  This year, that award was presented to Petty Officer First Class Rahel Van Der Riet.  

 

Clermont Police Officer LeSean Biggs was selected by the cadet leadership as the Instructor of the Year. He volunteers with the Battalion as Color Guard officer and is himself a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer.

LT Gary Schindele, USNSCC, Commanding Officer, Clermont Battalion, proudly states, “He is one of our graduated Sea Cadets who enlisted and has been stationed in Bahrain as a Master at Arms (Navy Police).  This is his first leave in almost 2 years”. Lt Schindele adds, “As we would say in Navy speak:  Bravo Zulu (BZ) to PO3 Whichard!

Clermont Battalion

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) is a federally chartered non-profit youth organization for young people, ages 11 through 17. USNSCC is comprised of two programs. The senior program, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC), is for young people, ages 13 through 17. The junior program, the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC), is for young people, ages 11 through 13.

The program is sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.  Locally, the Clermont Battalion is sponsored by the City of Clermont Police Department.

The Sea Cadet program IS NOT a military recruiting program.  It is an avenue for today’s youth to access high levels of exposure to STEM programs, and other specialized disciplines, which they will not get anywhere else.

Annually, 17 different scholarship funds are awarded to exceptional cadets who wish to pursue a college education.

Chief Broadway worked as a detective in New York City in 2001 and recalls that he was summoned back to work on September 11, to work in the landfill in Staten Island retrieving personal effects of persons who were killed when the planes crashed into the  World Trade Center Buildings.

Chief Broadway, his wife, and four daughters relocated to Gainesville, Florida in 2002, where he worked for the Gainesville Police Department. He became a Special Agent for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in 2004 and moved his family to Clermont in 2010 to join the Clermont Police Department as Police Captain. Broadway was selected as Clermont Police Chief in 2012, and since has become a prominent local figure and popular community leader. (See Mighty Warrior Military Race)

Since taking over the department, Chief Broadway has selected and successfully managed an ever-growing staff which currently consists of 81. The department has grown a positive relationship with the community, building trust and respect with such programs as COPPS. He and his officers hold meetings at various locations to update the community on events and activities in the community. They have implemented such programs as Smart 9-1-1 in which members from the community create a profile which can be helpful in emergency situations.  The team has developed a prescription drug take-back program, where people can leave medications in a drop box located at the Police department (no questions asked).  Clermont has a safe transaction area on the grounds of the Police Department where people can safely exchange items. This area is under 24-hour surveillance.

Chief Broadway is responsible for helping to bring the Clermont Battalion, US Navy Sea Cadets, to Clermont. This program, sponsored by the city of Clermont, prepares youth, ages 11 through 18, for all forms of military training.
