The Starfish Snake Plant is a compact, star-shaped succulent with thick, cylindrical leaves in grayish-green with darker green stripes. It’s drought-tolerant, easy to care for, and thrives indoors with minimal attention. The plant prefers bright, indirect light for optimal growth and color. Water only when the soil is completely dry (typically, every 2–3 weeks in warm indoor conditions). Repot the plant every 1–2 years in well-draining succulent soil mix if roots are crowded.

Native to Central American rainforests, it is a stunning ornamental houseplant. The plant undergoes Leaf Transformation: Young Monstera leaves are solid and heart-shaped. As the plant matures and receives enough light, it develops “fenestration” – the characteristic holes and splits that help the plant withstand heavy rain and wind in the wild. Monstera deliciosa can grow 30-70 feet in the wild but usually reaches 6-8 feet indoors. They thrive in bright, indirect light, but can tolerate some shade. Soil should be kept slightly damp, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings. As epiphytic climbers, the plant may benefit from having support such as a moss pole or stake.

With the recent winter freezes, everyone’s garden is probably struggling now to get back to its former glory. The Clermont Garden Club’s clubhouse grounds at 849 West Ave., Clermont is no exception. While we wait for many plants to return (like the hibiscus, jatropha, crotons), we marvel at the resilience of other plants that have bounced back. We are also indebted to the forethought of wise, past club groundskeepers who knew that plant diversification is the key to having a healthy garden at various times throughout the year. For this reason, we have chosen the grounds of the Clermont Garden Club as the Yard of the Month for April 2026.

The front walk of the property at 849 West Ave., Clermont is shaded by a beautiful oak tree. The tree’s sturdy branch is adorned by a large Staghorn fern (Platycerium), which is a unique epiphytic plant known for its antler-like fronds. Rob Farmer, club member Grounds Lead, is credited with wrapping the Staghorn fern during the latest freezing temps and adequately protecting this precious plant. The rest of the garden is sprinkled with various colors from the blue cluster flowers of the Plumbago auriculata, yellow flowers of the African iris (Dietes bicolor), pale purple of flowering plants in the mint family, and the striking pinks and reds of many bromeliads throughout the garden (such as Bromeliad Neoregelia and Aechmea gamosepala, also known as the matchstick bromeliad). The most striking color this time of the year, however, goes to the amaryllis or Barbados lily (Hippeastrum vittatum) which line the north side of the clubhouse leading into the back yard and gazebo. These gorgeous amaryllis plants have trumpet-like blooms of red-orange petals with white center stripes…giving them the appearance of stars.

Clermont Garden Club’s Yard of the Month for March is that of Tom Byrnes, at 10447 Largo Louisa Court in Clermont. Tom’s garden is vibrant, busy, and alive…abundant with plants and flowers for the pollinators. The yard is packed with passionfruit vines, herbs, various salvias (including Salvia Amistad), culpheas (including Culphea Schumannii), porterweeds plants (in blue, coral and red), firespikes (in pink, red, fuschia and purple), heirloom pentas in a multitude of colors and flowering trees (including a fragrant white cestrum).

Tom’s journey into pollinator gardening began about 32 years ago when he placed a potted flowering plant by the entrance, and saw a hummingbird come to sip its nectar. Intrigued and delighted, Tom wanted to draw more pollinators to his yard. After planting salvias, he then saw lots of butterflies. Tom began learning about which plants were hosts for which butterfly larvae, and he continued to plant these in his garden. During the growing season, Tom’s garden is abuzz with monarch, zebra, Gulf fritillary and various swallowtail butterflies (along with the hummingbirds).

Tom is the administrator of “For the Love of Butterflies, Hummingbirds and Other Pollinators” on the Nextdoor App. For the last 3-4 years, he has propagated his plants and shared them with a local nursery that specializes in pollinator plants.

If you stroll the grounds of the Clermont Garden Club at 849 West Ave in historic downtown Clermont, you will spy 2 new beautiful wooden benches in the gardens. The benches were made and gifted to the Clermont Garden Club by Brendon Fagan as part of his Eagle Scout project. Being an Eagle Scout is the highest rank in scouting, achieved by executing a significant service project in the community. Only 6% of Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Brendon Fagan, of Scout Troop #268, contacted the Clermont Garden Club about a year ago inquiring about projects he can do for the club. It was decided that the club could use a couple of outdoor benches for visitors to sit, relax, and enjoy the gardens. Brendon planned the project, purchased all materials, constructed 2 wooden benches and installed them on pavers on the grounds of the garden club. He demonstrated leadership and coordinate help from 4-5 other scouts. A total of 46 hours was needed for Brendon to complete this Eagle project.

Rhonda and Carolyn love bright colors as evidenced by the cerulean blue paint they have chosen to make their home the most colorful house for blocks around. The front porch of the house is adorned with metal floral wall art and family heirlooms of gliders and handmade wooden and rattan chairs in grays, burgundy and eye-catching yellow. Surrounding the porch area are gorgeous potted plants including succulents in yellow/white planters and a large Buddha Belly plant (Jatropha podagrica) in a cherry-red pot. Cute garden figurines and a mini bridge (also in cherry red!) complement the look. A staghorn fern lays below one live oak tree to the left of the porch. Towards the street, the base of a tall elegant live oak tree is adorned with many plants in large pots of vibrant aqua, teal and turquoise. There is a rose, croton (Codiaeum variegatum), variegated ginger and snake plants (Dracaena trifasciata). The back side of the oak is blanketed with aloe and other succulents…under the watchful eye of a large whimsical yellow frog planter that holds a Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema Tigress).

Rather, these plants are a relative of the monkey puzzle tree. It is often cultivated as a landscape tree in subtropical climates in North America (USDA zones 10 to 11) and grown indoors elsewhere as a manageable indoor tree, where they grow around 3-8 feet tall or can be trained as a bonsai or miniature tree. Outdoors, the maximum height of a Norfolk Island pine is around 200 feet tall. Whether grown inside or outdoors, the Norfolk pine requires copious amounts of light to survive. Ms. Robin Perez moved into the house 8 years ago, and has been transforming the yard since then with a variety of plants and flowers. There are tall, healthy plumerias (Frangipani) along the front and side of the house that flower in all different colors. Robin has planted various bromeliads, peace lily, snake plants (Dracaena), succulents (including kalanchoe), and crown-of-thorns (Euphorbia milii).

The Clermont Garden Club has chosen the garden of Tina Worrell at 1004 Everest Street in the Summit Greens subdivision to be the Yard of the Month for November. As a member of the Clermont Garden Club for over 20 years, Tina freely shares with others her vast knowledge of plants…as well as clippings from her yard for others to grow in theirs!

Tina’s expansive garden wraps around the house from the front to the back. There are Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia), zinnias (of the Asteraceae family), Blue Daze (Volvulus), swamp sunflower (Helianthus), Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow plant (Brunfelsia) and Siam Tulips (Curcuma). Bromeliads (Bromeliaceous) brings color to her garden, along with a variety of Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia): white, ‘Candy Stripe’, and lilac. Other trees around Tina’s yard include plumerias, a fig tree (Ficus carica), eucalyptus (Myrtaceous family), Jerusalem Thorn Tree (Parkinsonia), and peach tree (Prunus). Continuing to the backyard, you enter the peaceful setting with a water feature…a brook passing under a small wooden bridge surrounded by lush plants.

There is Brazilian Cloak (Medazepams), Coral Tree (Fabaceae) and a loquat tree (Eriobotrya Japonica) that was started from a seed from Bok Tower Gardens years ago. One more plant worth mentioning is the Vanilla Orchid (Orchidaceous), which is the source for vanilla flavoring used in perfumes and cooking. The Clermont Garden Club is very happy to declare Tina’s garden as Yard of the Month.
