The Clermont Police Department (CPD) held its bi-monthly Coffee with a Cop, a community relations event, on Wednesday, May 20 at SevenMade, 685 Seventh Street, Clermont. Coffee with a Cop is a program designed to enhance community member relationship with law enforcement officers and the citizens of the communities that they serve. Businesses throughout the area often host the Coffee with a Cop program to exhibit not only support of the community but also support of the local first responders in the community. It also provides a neutral location for real conversations about issues that matter.

Sgt. Erin Razo, the department’s Community Relations Supervisor, announced that the department’s annual summer youth-related activities are planned and set to go beginning in June. The CPD has had a long tradition of summer programs that enhance interaction with youth and young adults.

Guests were treated with delicious breakfast refreshments provided by members of the club while Clermont police officers were on hand to answer questions or discuss community affairs with the public. The historical building, that is home to the Woman’s Club organization that was chartered in 1927, has become a favorite annual location for the Coffee with a Cop program. The building, built in 1921 as a motor camp building, retains much of its original interior woodcraft design and floor plan that rings-in a welcoming atmosphere to those who enter the cozy clubhouse.

Topics of discussion included the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics that will take place on April 2nd. Law Enforcement officers from over 300 Florida agencies, including the Clermont police department, all participate in the state-wide torch run to benefit athletes of Special Olympics Florida. Contact Ken Roop, Torch Run Director, at 813-508-6905 or Kenroop@sofl.org for more information.

The 5th annual Conrad Buckley Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on May 1st at the Legends Golf Course, 1700 Legendary Blvd., Clermont. Registration begins at 7 AM with opening ceremonies beginning at 8 AM. The golf tournament raises funds that are applied to the Conrad Buckley Scholarship program, a program that helps graduating high school students with higher education expenses. Ofc. Buckley, 52 years of age, died in 2020 due to complications related to the Covid-19 virus. Multiple sponsorship levels remain available currently. Contact Cpl. Drew Evans at Devans@ClermontFl.org or 352-394-5588 for registration details.

The Clermont Woman’s Club is pleased to announce that their annual scholarship program is underway this year; a $1,500.00 scholarship to a deserving female student that is pursuing a four-year degree. With an application deadline of April 1st, eligible applicants must be residents of Lake County and attend either Lake Minneola High School, South Lake High School, East Ridge High School or Pine Crest Academy. Scholarship details can be found at www.clermontwomansclub.org/p/clermont-womans-club-scholarship.

The Woman’s Club Public relations chairperson, Pam Schmitz, announced that the club will be hosting a fundraiser on March 26th at the clubhouse. A Bunco style game will begin at 1 PM with a $15.00 entry fee to participate, with refreshments included. The public is welcome to attend.

The Woman’s Club of Clermont is a non-profit service organization and by fundraising throughout the year, the club supports international, national and local charities. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month (September through May), 12:30pm at the clubhouse, 655 W. Broome Street, Clermont.

The Clermont Police Department will host the next Coffee with a Cop event from 9:00-11:00 a.m. July 20, at Cheesers Palace Cafe, 707 W. Minneola Ave. Downtown Clermont.

The public will get to talk with local Clermont police officers and ask questions, voice their concerns and get to know the officers in their neighborhoods.

“As always, we welcome the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with our Clermont citizens,” Chief Charles Broadway said.

Coffee with a Cop allows citizens to meet police officers in a relaxed, neutral atmosphere with no speeches, no agenda, and no preset subjects. It provides a “face” for both the officer and the citizen to get to know each other and form a working trust by understanding the mutual goals that they both have to build a better community. This will be a “distraction-free” time with an officer, with no pending radio calls or cell phones going off.

Drop by and say hello. The Clermont Police Department looks forward to meeting you.
