November 29, 2025-Charlotte, North Carolina

This past Saturday the Brooks Cross Country South Regional was held at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. Earlier this year Footlocker, the sponsor of the South Regional for the past 45 years, announced that this year’s race was cancelled. Thankfully, a few weeks later Brooks stepped in and took over the sponsorship for the South Regional, so that the race could happen.

Now, for 46 years the South Regional has been one of the four regional qualifiers for the Nationals held at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. The South Regional takes runners from fourteen different states, including Florida, Texas, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Louisiana and US territories. There is an array of events on the day of the South Regional, including high school grade level races for boys and girls and the boys and girls championship races, for runners seeking to qualify for the Nationals in San Diego. The top ten runners from the championship races qualify for San Diego and ultimately compete with thirty other elite runners from the other three regions. The South Regional is also an event that college coaches regard as a race and course that provides results for recruiting prospective runners. The longevity of the event, the competition year after year, and the challenging cross country course give results that college coaches have come to trust in their recruiting endeavors.

This year, the East Ridge High School Girls Cross Country team had seven runners participate in the South Regional at McAlpine. All seven girls ran in the combined girls grade level race, which started promptly at 9:30 AM in frigid temperatures. The course at McAlpine Park begins with a long near one kilometer straightaway. The course then u-turns and takes the runners through a wooded area and up a steep hill at the midpoint. The course then descends and the runners circle a pond before running most of the third mile in another wooded area of the park. Once the runners re-emerge to circle the pond one last time there is approximately a quarter mile to reach the finish line. Awards were earned by grade level – top ten grade level finishers received gold medals, 11-20 grade level finishers received silver medals, and 21-30 grade level finishers received bronze medals. Out of a field of 137 runners, each of East Ridge’s athletes earned medals for their performances at Brooks!

On Saturday morning, the East Ridge High School girls cross country season came to an end with the conclusion of the Class 4A State Championships at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. The meet was a showcase of all of the elite female runners in the entire state of Florida. This was the fourth consecutive season that the Knights have qualified for the state championships and the fifth time in the school’s 24 year history. This year’s team made program history over the past couple of weeks when they earned their fourth consecutive district championship and secured the program’s first regional team runner-up trophy. At this year’s state championships, with the Class 4A competition better than it has ever been, the Knights sought one more opportunity to make some school history!

Members of the girls cross country team previewed the course at Apalachee the day before the state meet

The Course: The venue for the state championships was Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. This has been the venue for the state championships since 2012. The Knights actually competed at Apalachee for the Pre-State Meet back in October. The park has a challenging cross country course with a diversity of terrains and undulating hills. About half of the course is grass, which has some flat straightaways and some gradual downhills. The other half of the course is tightly packed gravel on sand, and it features a lengthy uphill, affectionately known as “the Wall,” that runners must complete twice within the course. Runners get a scenic view through some wooded areas and spectators and coaches get multiple great views of their athletes with the course’s two loops. In the middle of the loop is a cut-through for coaches and spectators to move along in order to see their athletes multiple times throughout the race. The fog began to lift and the sun began to show itself right as the Class 4A girls race was starting. The humidity was thick and the temperature climbed quickly into the 70s.

Girls from 32 different state-qualifying teams and sixteen qualifying individuals competed Saturday morning in the Class 4A State Championships. The girls race went off at 9:00 AM – the fifth of eight races of the day. Assigned in box 34, left of the course’s right boundary, East Ridge’s girls team made final preparations by stretching, striding, and sipping water, before the race. The official called the runners to their marks, and fired the starting pistol. With that, the Knights, amidst 233 elite runners, took off across the grassy straightaway into a rising sun.

East Ridge’s Pink Wave stormed the starting area and put themselves in the top 20% of the large field of runners! In fact, through the first mile, East Ridge was in second place – just a few points behind Creekside, the defending 4A champions. Senior Rhyen Foley and freshman Hortance Sallault led East Ridge’s Pink Wave for the entirety of the race! Racing in close proximity to familiar District 3 and Region 2 rivals, the duo settled into their second mile pace in an effort to secure their favorable positions. In the third mile, separated by a few seconds, both Foley and Sallault rushed “the Wall” for the second time of the race. They hit the long straightaway and charged the finish line trying desperately to catch girls and also trying to not be caught. Foley, racing in her fourth and final state championship race, and Sallault, racing in her first state championship race, claimed finishing positions 38 and 39, respectively! Foley finished in 19:46 – the eighth fastest state performance by a Knight in East Ridge’s 24 year history!

Sallault finished in 19:50 – the ninth fastest state performance by a Knight in East Ridge’s history! For Sallault, her 19:50 on Saturday tied the fastest state performance by a freshman in East Ridge’s history – a record she now co-holds with her senior teammate Veronica Peterson!

Senior Veronica Peterson finishing her fourth and final state meet; photo by Quiana Peterson

Speaking of Peterson, she was next up for the Pink Wave! In fact, her and junior Jessie Volz raced near each other and kept themselves in close proximity to Foley and Sallault. Peterson and Volz were separated by just a few seconds at each of the mile checkpoints throughout the race. In the third mile, the separation widened to ten seconds and nine positions between the two. Peterson, racing in her fourth and final state championship race, placed 53rd overall and finished in a time of 20:05. Peterson’s performance on Saturday is now the tenth fastest state performance by a Knight in the school’s history! In fact, Peterson currently owns four of the top ten state performances in the school’s history!

Volz secured the 62nd place and finished in a time of 20:15 – the now eleventh fastest state performance by a Knight in the school’s history! Furthermore, Volz’s performance on Saturday was just over a minute faster than her performance at the state championships last year!

Sophomore Helen Robertson and juniors Taylor Walker and Lexi Whitehead were the closers for the Pink Wave on Saturday. Robertson, who nearly matched her performance at Pre-State which was raced in far better weather conditions, secured the fifth scoring position for the Knights! She placed 96th overall and finished in a time of 20:57! Robertson’s performance on Saturday is now the fifteenth fastest state performance by a Knight!

Walker pushed herself as hard as she could down the long straightaway to the finish line. She placed 105th overall and finished in a time of 21:01.

Whitehead placed 138th overall and finished in a time of 21:46.

East Ridge High School took fourth place out of 32 complete teams at Saturday’s FHSAA Class 4A State Championships in Tallahassee! This was the highest team finishing position at the state meet for the Knights in the school’s history! Creekside High School out of St. John’s County won the state championship – their second consecutive state title. Spanish River High School out of Boca Raton was the team runner up. The overall individual state champion was sophomore Madison Muller from Riverview (Sarasota) High School. Muller finished the state race in a swift time of 17:37.

She also earned a place medal at the varsity level at the Green Monster Invitational. Robertson improved by nearly three minutes from her first race this season. For Peterson, her career medals include four district medals, three regional medals, and two regular season individual championships. For Foley, who will also race at Brooks next Saturday, her career medals include three district medals, three regional medals, one state medal, and four regular season individual championships.
The East Ridge High School girls cross country team competed on Saturday morning, October 26, in the Lake County Championships. East Ridge hosted the county championships for the third consecutive year. Last season, the Knights won the county championships, and were sought to defend their title this season.Today’s county championships were the second home meet for the Knights this season, as they had hosted the SSG Hammond Invitational at the school last month. Also, today’s meet was the last meet of the regular season for the Knights, as they will soon begin making their final preparations for the postseason. The start of the race took the girls across the football field and out of the stadium and onto the grassy and hilly campus of East Ridge. The course ran the perimeter of a lot of the campus, and ascended a large hill affectionately known as the “Green Monster.” Then the course normalized with some flat straightaways, making one big loop around a portion of the campus. The field of runners merged back into the “Green Monster,” but this time to descend it, and re-ran the perimeter, and back into the football stadium, and then ended with an approximately 300M track finish.

Girls from five teams participated in the Lake County Championships on Saturday. The varsity girls’ race started at 8:00 am.

Junior Rhyen Foley led the Knights, as she has done in each of the meets throughout the season, and had her sights on an individual championship. Foley has gone head to head with several elite runners throughout the season, and yesterday’s County Championships pinned her against Tavares’s top girl, Cheyenne Thomas. Foley and Thomas had gone head to head in four races prior to yesterday’s County Championships, and to add to the rivalry, they had split, two wins each in those four races. Foley had gotten the better of Thomas in the FCA Preseason Invitational and the Whispering Pines Invitational back in August. However, Thomas had gotten the better of Foley at FLRunners in Lakeland and at the SSG Hammond Invitational, which was hosted at Foley’s home course. Thomas took off early to lead the field, and Foley kept her within striking distance through the first mile. However, as the lead runners closed in on the halfway point of the race, Foley had bridged the gap between herself and Thomas and took the lead. Foley’s lead, by the time she reached the two-mile mark, had grown to an approximately 25-second lead ahead of Thomas.

This time around, emerging first at the top of the final hill of the course was Foley, who continued to push the throttle! She was able to put more distance between herself and Thomas, and when Foley hit the track, she amped up her speed even more! Foley crossed the finish line in a new course record time of 18:33 to secure her first individual Lake County Championship!

Senior Hanna Warren was the second Knight to cross the finish line at the County Championships yesterday morning. Warren, running in her last regular season meet of her highly decorated high school cross country career, placed third overall and finished in a time of 19:51 – a more than a minute improvement from her performance last season at the county championships! Warren is now just one of two Knights to have broken the twenty-minute mark on East Ridge’s modern course!

Sophomore Taylor Walker- and junior Adriana Mustin ran close to each other for the entirety of the race. They both hit the track and found themselves in a tight finish with two opponents from Tavares. Walker, who overcame one of those opponents, was the third Knight to cross the finish line yesterday morning. She placed seventh overall and finished in a time of 21:21 – a more than a minute improvement from her time at last season’s County Championships! Mustin, the Knights’ fourth scorer, took ninth place, and finished in a time of 21:26 – a near-minute improvement from her performance at last year’s County Championships!

Rounding out the scoring positions for the Knights was freshman Kori Lindley. Lindley, who has put together a string of great races for herself, added one more great one to that string. Lindley placed tenth overall and finished in a time of 21:39 – her second fastest performance of the season, as well as a more than two-minute improvement from her performance at SSG Hammond Invitational last month!

Sophomore Jessie Volz was the sixth Knight to cross the finish line yesterday. Volz, who has improved immensely from last year, was able to secure the twelfth spot and finished in a time of 22:17 – her second fastest time of the season and more than a four-minute improvement from her performance at last season’s Lake County Championships! Volz’s performance enabled her to join her teammates in the medal line.

Senior Neelyanis Lugo was the seventh finisher for the Knights, as she placed sixteenth overall and finished in a time of 23:00 – a nine-second improvement from her performance last season at the Lake County Championships!

Junior Avery Post placed seventeenth overall and finished in a time of 23:23. Freshman Sara Garzon, followed Post closely throughout the track finish, and placed eighteenth overall and finished in a time of 23:25 – a more than one-minute improvement from her performance at SSG Hammond Invitational last month! Sophomore Lexi Whitehead placed 24th overall and finished in a time of 24:15 – a more than thirty-second improvement from her performance at last season’s County Championships! Senior J’Mariana Douglas placed 31st overall and finished in a time of 25:02 – a near four-minute improvement from her performance at last year’s County Championships and her second-fastest performance of the season! Freshman Daniela Garzon placed 35th overall and finished in a time of 26:22 – her second-fastest time of the season! Senior Allie McCleary placed 38th overall and finished in a time of 27:17 – her second-fastest time of the season! Junior Alyssa Schacht placed 40th overall and finished in a time of 27:42 – a near thirty-second improvement from her performance at the County Championships last season! Sophomore Yeidy Diaz placed 42nd overall and finished in a time of 28:55 – a near three-minute improvement from her performance at last season’s County Championships and her second-fastest time of the season!

The Knights successfully defended their title at yesterday’s Lake County Championships! They were able to defeat the other county rivals by placing their first six finishers in the top fifteen positions! East Ridge edged out Tavares High School by just two position points.

The East Ridge Boys Cross Country Team was back in action on Saturday, September 21st, participating in the SSG Hammond Invitational. The SSG Hammond Invitational is hosted by none other than our very own Knights so the race was a home meet. Instead of waking up very early, getting on a bus and running at a foreign location, the Knights were able to sleep in a little bit and show off their unique course to the rest of Central Florida. The campus of East Ridge may present one of the most difficult challenges as it has something that most areas in Florida do not: Hills. The course at East Ridge is not a course that is easy to run a personal best time nor season best time. Due to the elevation, it can be extremely tough for a distance runner. Saturday was no different.

The Knights were able to protect their home race rather respectably. East Ridge ran a solid race, garnering a second-place finish, just behind District mates and a very formidable foe, Horizon High School. Horizon placed four runners in the top top and all five in the top 13. Finishing behind the Knights was also a familiar foe, Windermere High School. In fourth place was Ocala’s own West Port High School, which packs a very solid 1-2 punch, rounded out with Tavares finishing fifth.

East Ridge was once again led by Sophomore Axel Sallault. Sallault, who was running his home course and knew the terrain very well cruised to the lead from the very beginning of the race and never relinquished the lead, keeping about a 20-second lead consistently throughout the race. Axel would finish in first with a time of 16:44. This is one of the fastest times ever run at East Ridge’s course, breaking the course record, his own record set last season in 2023. Also finishing in the top ten for the Knights was Junior Caleb Walker. Walker finished in seventh place in a time of 17:44. Finishing just off of his personal best time was Junior Gustavo Vargas, finishing eleventh in a time of 18:11, the fastest he has ever run on his home course by well over a minute. Completing the course in the top 20 was Freshman Aubin Sallault, his highest finish in his High School career. Sallault completed the course in 18:48. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights was Sophomore Tyce Ertel finishing in 22nd place and a 19:04. Fellow Juniors Dylan McCleary and James Laack were next for the Knights, with McCleary finishing in 35th place (19:58) and Laack in 42nd place (20:17).

The East Ridge Junior Varsity Team also finished as runner-ups, finishing just behind Windermere High School. The Knights were led by Freshman Watson Dunham who was coming off an injury and ran an amazing 20:28 and won the JV race. Watson, much like varsity winner Axel Sallault, took the lead from the beginning and never relinquished it. Finishing a few spots behind Dunham was fellow Freshman Gavan Flaugher who finished in fourth place and in a time of 20:45. Finishing third for the Knights was Sophomore Eli Parks finishing 22nd with a time of 22:18. Parks was followed by Junior Scott Bori with time of 22:25. Rounding out the scoring for the JV Knights was another Freshman, Maddox Nickolaou, who continues to improve with every week running a 22:32. Rounding out the finishers for the JV Knights was Andrew Conway (29th place, 22:42), Evan DeAnnuntis (31st place, 22:46), Isaac Bori (34th place, 22:54), Christopher Stuemke (35th place, 23:00), Daniel Baggett (37th place, 23:08), Aiden Floudiotis (50th place, 24:43), John Hall (59th place, 25:37), and Jayden Ramjohn (60th place, 25:50)

The East Ridge High School girls cross country team competed in the West Orange High School Invitational in Winter Garden on Saturday morning. This annual tradition has often brought the Knights both team and individual success. Last season, the Knights took the top honors, placing first out of seventeen complete teams, so this season, they sought to successfully defend their title. This morning’s high level of humidity along with some course changes did not help the large field of runners make a lot of improvements in timed results. However, the Knights charged the foggy athletic fields of West Orange High School, and when the fog lifted, it was the Knights who stood above all the rest.

Varsity Team Huddle at the start line

Girls from nineteen complete teams throughout Central Florida participated in the West Orange High School Invitational today. The varsity girls’ race started at 7:15 AM. The start of the race took the girls across some athletic fields near the football stadium. Then, the course took the runners around two loops around the back end of the campus, rounding some soccer fields, and through a small wooded area.

For the fifth time this season, junior Rhyen Foley was the first Knight to cross the finish line! After a narrow start, the race normalized, and Foley found herself amidst opposing elite runners – specifically Olympia’s Emily Knophle and Viera’s Addison Elwell. At the first mile mark, Foley and Knophle were neck and neck, with Elwell trailing by about three seconds.

Junior Rhyen Foley leading Viera’s Addison Elwell at the West Orange Invitational;

Shortly into the second mile, the pace became a bit much for Knophle, as she dropped back, and Elwell pulled up to join Foley at the front. Rounding mile marker two, Foley and Elwell were, as they had been at Astronaut last week, in near lockstep with each other. The two front runners created a lot of space from the rest of the field in the final mile, and when both runners entered the finish area, Elwell was just a few seconds in front of Foley. Last week at the Astronaut Invitational, Elwell was able to defeat Foley by twenty seconds. However, this morning at West Orange, Foley narrowed the gap considerably. She finished as the meet’s runner up in a time of 18:57, merely six seconds behind Elwell!

Junior Veronica Peterson was the second Knight to finish at West Orange. She placed fourth overall and finished in a time of 20:03. Senior Hanna Warren was the third Knight to finish this morning. Warren placed fifth overall and finished in a time of 20:13. Peterson and Warren found themselves in no man’s land for most of the race, so they had to compete with each other rather than nearby opponents. Peterson was able to pull ahead of Warren in the third mile, as both runners rushed the finish area and helped to secure those coveted top five positions!

Junior Adriana Mustin, sophomore Taylor Walker, and senior Neelyanis Lugo claimed finishing spots 17th, 21st, and 22nd, respectively. The three Knights stayed in close proximity throughout the race, overtaking opponent after opponent, and pushing the Knights closer and closer to a victory. In the last mile, the three broke apart and overcame even more opponents in the final turns of the finish area. Mustin finished in 21:56, Walker finished in 22:02, and Lugo finished in 22:06, pushing the Knights to victory! The seventh Knight to cross the finish line was Junior Avery Post. Post finished in 34th place and clocked a swift time of 22:46, her second fastest time of the season!

For the second year in the row, the Knights won the West Orange Invitational. Additionally, this was the third time the Knights have won an invitational this season! The Knights were able to outperform all of the Class 4A District 3 rivals that competed at West Orange this morning! East Ridge defeated six District 3 teams, including Windermere, Viera, Olympia, West Orange, Boone, and Lake Nona! Windermere High School was the team runner up, as they placed their top two scorers within the first twelve positions. The overall individual winner for the girls varsity race was junior Addison Elwell from Viera High School. Elwell finished today’s race in a swift time of 18:51.

The Knights also had seven runners participate in the girls junior varsity race this morning at West Orange High School. Freshman Kori Lindley made her return today, and was the individual champion of the junior varsity race – a race that had 98 total runners! Lindley finished in a time of 23:25 – which was a new career personal best! Sophomore Jessie Volz, the second Knight to finish, placed third overall and clocked a time of 24:18.

The East Ridge High School girls cross country team competed in the Lake County Championships on Saturday morning. East Ridge hosted the county championships for the second consecutive year, and what a competitive meet Lake County showcased today! Last season, the Knights placed third as a team at the county championships and were destined to raise the bar this season.

Today’s county championships was the second home meet for the Knights this season, as they had hosted the SSG Hammond Invitational at the school just two weeks ago.

Girls from six different schools participated in the Lake County Championships on Saturday. The varsity girls race started at 8:00 AM. Sophomore Rhyen Foley toppled both the Green Monster and all of the competition that Lake County had to offer! Foley’s finish time of 19:35 set a new course record at East Ridge High School! Furthermore, Rhyen’s result was more than a three-and-a-half minute improvement from her finish time at the Lake County Championships held at East Ridge last season! This was also the fifth time this season that Foley led her team as the first scorer for the Knights!
