The Greater Clermont Cancer Foundation (GCCF) joined efforts with the City of Mascotte and the Mascotte Police Department on Friday afternoon, October 17^th, to bring awareness to not only breast cancer, but cancer of all forms in recognition of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The annual tradition, known throughout the community as the “Cruiser for the Cause” fundraiser,  was held at the city’s civic center on North Sunset Avenue. Food and bingo opportunities offered by the local American Legion Post 239 was highlighted with a hair donation by Mascotte Mayor Steven Sheffield. Mayor Sheffield is well known for his long locks of hair and a beard that is fitting for Santa Clause himself. What many do not know is that Mayor Sheffield’s hair style is in honor of his beloved mother that was a 30-year cancer survivor and unfortunately passed away in 2022. “I have been letting my hair grow since my mother passed away. I will be cutting my hair this evening and donating it to the Wigs for Kids organization- an organization that helps children who are fighting hair loss because of cancer treatments”, says Mayor Sheffield.

Roxy’s Beauty Salon and Barber, 708 East Myers Boulevard, Mascotte was on-hand to assist the mayor with his new hair style. Clermont Mayor Tim Murry was a temporary barber pro-tem for a few moments with the Roxy’s team. With one mayor helping another, Mayor Murry was happy to help the team with its first cut of Mayor Sheffield’s healthy and flowing hair. Roxy’s Beauty Salon is a recognized participant of the Wigs for Kids organization. Donors can contact Roxy’s owner Camilla Marin at 352-557-4869 for further details. 

The annual free event included entertainment from DJ Justice with the Omilasa Live Band as well as fire truck tours for the children provided by the Lake County Fire and Rescue Department.

The GCCF’s mission is to provide financial assistance, support and comfort to people fighting cancer that live in the South Lake County community. GCCF also provides scholarships to immediate family members or the patient themselves who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

GCCF is not affiliated with any other area or national organizations and 100% of the funds raised go directly to helping those in need. GCCF also strives to provide services that are not offered by other cancer support organizations. “We are a 100% volunteer organization with no paid positions. 100% of granted funds are disbursed to qualified recipients in the South Lake area”, says GFFC Representative Kay Simpson.
