Second Harvest Food Bank is a vital organization dedicated to providing families in need of food with access to groceries. At a time when many families are facing heightened food insecurity, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida is proud to support the work of Second Harvest Food Bank.

Throughout November, Goodwill shoppers in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Brevard, Volusia and Lake counties can round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, with the money raised helping Second Harvest purchase and distribute meals to local families in need. Goodwill will match the community donations up to $10,000.

“For every dollar donated at the register, you’re giving a family four meals to put on their table,” said Dr. Bahíyyah Maroon, Goodwill’s Vice President of Mission Impact. “With support from our shoppers, we can join Second Harvest in its mission to minimize hunger and food anxieties in our community even as so many in our area face the uncertainty after losing SNAP benefits at the start of November.”

Close to 3 million people in the state rely on SNAP, including nearly 500,000 in Central Florida.

“SNAP provides nine meals for every one that food banks like Second Harvest can offer,” said Derrick Chubbs, President and CEO. “When that support is interrupted, it takes all of us working together to fill the gap. We’re grateful to Goodwill and their customers for stepping up to help us bridge the meal gap and make sure our neighbors have the food they need.”

SHFBCF is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to more than 870 local nonprofit feeding partners throughout Central Florida. With the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank distributes 300,000 meals every day to a seven-county service area, which includes Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia. Feeding neighbors facing hunger is only the beginning. By investing in job training programs, advocating for access to nutritious foods, and inspiring our community to get involved, SHFBCF is leaning into the root causes of hunger and helping our neighbors thrive. With support from the Central Florida community, Second Harvest Food Bank is feeding inspiration, change, achievement, health — and families facing hunger. To learn more about SHFBCF, visit FeedHopeNow.org.

Retail stores in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Brevard, Volusia and Lake counties will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

“Many of Goodwill’s shoppers and donors are busy people with 9 to 5 jobs,” said Ed Durkee, president and CEO. “By offering extended store hours, we aim to make it more convenient for our customers to get their shopping done and drop off their donations – which in turn, will provide even more goods and resources for our neighbors.”

Donations allow Goodwill to offer low-cost goods to the community while also providing resources and jobs to Central Floridians.
Goodwill Industries of Central Florida (GICF) has dozens of job opportunities available for anyone looking for a job this holiday season – and beyond – as it sees more demand from shoppers at its local stores. Goodwill also offers generous, best-in-class benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, as well as a tuition scholarship program that launched in May of 2022.

By Kim Praniewicz

While the economic impact of the pandemic can still be felt here in Central Florida, the pace of recovery is picking up: Theme parks are returning to full operation, hotels are reaching capacity, and restaurants are serving more diners. As that happens, there’s an opportunity to reconnect thousands of Floridians with new jobs and opportunities.

What you might not know is that there’s a surprisingly simple way you can help make that happen: The next time you reorganize or redecorate the house, pencil in a trip to Goodwill.

Consider these reasons that make donating a win-win:

Goodwill welcomes much more than just clothes. While we’ll gladly take those gently used coats, sweaters or shoes, don’t stop reorganizing at the bedroom closet. Our donation centers also accept sporting goods, tools, lawn equipment (with gasoline removed), books, toys, DVDs, dishes, luggage, decorations and a wide range of furniture.

Goodwill accepts some broken electronics. If your computer, laptop or cell phone goes kaput, feel free to bring it to a Goodwill donation center. Our team will check to see if we’re able to refurbish it. If not, we’ll recycle the batteries safely.

Donating is fast and convenient. If you’re a first-time donor, you might envision waiting in line or lugging heavy boxes. But all you have to do is pull up to our drop-off area, and our team will bring a cart right to your car, making it possible to donate a whole trunkful of items in just a few minutes.

It’s good for the environment. Donating your lightly used belongings gives them a new lease on life, keeping them out of landfills and effectively cutting their carbon footprint in half. On top of that, Goodwill does its part to reduce our own environmental impact by recycling cardboard, plastics and other items.

Your donation is tax-deductible — and digital. At drop-off, you’ll be asked if you want a tracking ticket that includes directions to set up an online account – which means no more hoarding paper receipts. When it’s time to do your year-end tax deduction, just log in to our Donor Portal and view your complete donation history.

While donating clothing and household goods to your local Goodwill might not seem like much, the reality is that it translates to more resources and jobs for neighbors in need. Shopping at our stores is equally important because ninety cents out of every dollar in sales will go directly to our nonprofit services – and right now, that can do more good than ever.

Consider all the ways that funding goes back to the community: Through Project COMPASS, revenue from stores goes to provide one-on-one academic support and life skills education to high school students who are at risk of dropping out. At our vocational rehabilitation program, people facing obstacles to employment can gain on-the-job skills training and experience. Meanwhile, our virtual Job Connection Center offers services ranging from interview practice to certification programs, connecting thousands of Central Floridians with work every year.

The bottom line? While Central Florida is dealing with plenty of labor challenges, your donations are part of the solution. Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors, Goodwill has been able to serve this community for more than 60 years – and we look forward to continuing to pursue our mission for many years to come.

Kim Praniewicz is the vice president of marketing and mission advancement for Goodwill Industries of Central Florida

Participants Will Learn How to Prepare a Résumé

On Wed., April 7, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida’s virtual job connection team will host a free webinar for job seekers. The latest in a series of virtual presentations, the session will focus on how to create a résumé that stands out to employers by spotlighting key transferrable skills.

Interested participants must register in advance by visiting https://bit.ly/3fgKaPP.

According to the latest report from the Department of Economic Opportunity, there were nearly 474,000 Floridians still out of work in February. With Central Florida counties seeing among the highest unemployment rates in the state, Goodwill’s job connection services are more important than ever to the community. Employment specialists have been working virtually with job seekers to update résumés, practice interviewing and apply for openings online.
