Lake County’s Keep Lake Beautiful Announces Clean-Up and Disposal Event For Jan. 24

- Volunteer sign-in
- Bulk items drop-off, household hazardous waste, and waste tire collection (up to 24 rimless tires per household) available at no charge to Lake County residents with identification
Mascotte: City Hall (100 East Myers Blvd., Mascotte, FL 34753)
- Volunteer sign-in
- Community clean-up only

This event is a partnership between Keep Lake Beautiful, Lake County Solid Waste, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the City of Mascotte, the City of Groveland, Waste Pro, and the Florida Department of Transportation.

Community clean-up

Volunteers will collect litter. Preregister at keeplakebeautiful.com/#events or register in person on the day of the event. Volunteer check-in starts at 8:45 am

KLB will provide trash grabbers, safety vests, trash bags, gloves, and water. An adult must accompany volunteers under 18 years old. Participants are encouraged to wear proper attire, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Volunteer hours are available.

Bulk item and household hazardous waste drop-off

Residents can dispose of excess trash and bulky items at this event. Lake County’s Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Unit also will be on-site to accept paint, fuel, household chemicals/cleaners, motor oil, and other hazardous household waste.

Waste Tire Amnesty Day

Lake County residents can help combat mosquito populations and keep the community clean by participating in Waste Tire Amnesty Day. Residents may dispose of up to 24 passenger car tires (per household) measuring 40 inches or less at no charge. Large commercial tires will not be accepted, and rims must be removed.

Residents may also bring their tires to the Lake County Central Solid Waste Facility located at 13130 County Landfill Rd., Tavares, from 8 am to 2 pm on Jan. 24.

There is no charge for Lake County residents to participate in Waste Tire Amnesty Day, but identification is required.

Lake Minneola High School Partners with Keep Lake Beautiful For Park Clean-Up

Lake Minneola High School recently teamed up with Keep Lake Beautiful for a park clean-up initiative aimed at enhancing the natural beauty of Minneola Trailhead Park. Students joined forces to remove litter and improve the area, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship and community pride.

The clean-up event provided a hands-on opportunity for participants to give back to their surroundings while raising awareness about the importance of maintaining public spaces.

The initiative not only improved the appearance of Minneola Trailhead Park but also served as a reminder of how small acts of service can create a lasting impact. By taking an active role in preserving local green spaces, Lake Minneola High School students set an example of civic responsibility and environmental care.

Keep Lake Beautiful continues to encourage local engagement in similar efforts, emphasizing that a cleaner, greener community starts with the dedication of its residents.

Keep Lake Beautiful Creates Clean Up-A-Spot Program

Keep Lake Beautiful has created a new self-directed clean-up program intended for individual volunteers and small volunteer groups of six people or less. Volunteers are encouraged to work within their local neighborhoods or other public areas such as parks, waterfronts, or boat ramps. Keep Lake Beautiful will provide a kit that includes the necessary clean up supplies for every volunteer. As a thank you, registered volunteers will receive a Keep Lake Beautiful hat, reusable water bottle, and reusable shopping bag upon completion of their clean up and return of loaned equipment. Volunteers wishing to sign-up can complete the online registration form found on the Keep Lake Beautiful webpage at www.KeepLakeBeautiful.com.

Keep Lake Beautiful Reminds Residents Of Fertilizer Restriction

In accordance with Lake County’s Fertilizer Ordinance, Keep Lake Beautiful (KLB) reminds residents of a fertilizer restriction. From June 1 through Sept. 30, the application of phosphorus and nitrogen to residential turf grass is prohibited.

This restriction is intended to help reduce nutrient loading from urban landscapes to our bodies of water. The ordinance was recommended by the Keep Lake Beautiful Committee and approved by the Lake County Board of County Commissioners in 2017.

Keep Lake Beautiful has an ongoing nutrient pollutant awareness campaign that gives residents the opportunity to pledge to keep a “Lake Friendly Lawn.” Residents who take the pledge promise to educate themselves on nutrient pollution and the fertilizer ordinance as well as to share the initiative with others and engage the community to help beautify Lake County. No One Should Need To Be Reminded To Keep Lake Beautiful And Properly Dispose of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) And Used Cleaning Supplies

The South Lake Tablet is going to publish this press release along with a plea for everyone to take pride in their community and Keep Lake Beautiful.

Keep Lake Beautiful – During this time when residents are utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect themselves from COVID-19, Keep Lake Beautiful would like to remind everyone to also protect our environment from PPE litter by properly disposing of these items. PPE can include plastic or rubber gloves, used sanitizing wipes, masks, and used cleaning supplies. Please properly dispose of these items in a trash can and do not leave them on the ground. If there is no trash can nearby, please keep the used items in a bag until they can be properly disposed of at home.

Properly disposing of used PPE items and used cleaning supplies prevents them from becoming litter and ending up in the environment and local water bodies. Many of these items contain plastics and nitrile rubber that do not break down quickly and will remain as litter for an extended time. For example, some types of plastic, such as a plastic bag, can take 10 or more years to break down and other types, such as a plastic bottle, can take 450 or more years to break down.

Keep Lake Beautiful To Host Countywide Cleanup (October 5)

Keep Lake Beautiful, A Keep America Beautiful Affiliate, is seeking residents and volunteers to participate in the Lake County Countywide Cleanup on Saturday, October 5 from 9 am to noon. Volunteers are needed to help cleanup along roadways and residents are encouraged to clean up their homes and yards and drop off bulk items for proper disposal. Trash grabbers, trash bags, gloves, safety vests and water will be provided to volunteers.

Locations for the cleanup are listed below:

Minneola Athletic Complex, 1300 Fosgate Road (Education Avenue), Minneola
East Lake Community Park, Wallick Road, Sorrento
Northwest Lake Park, 200 Shiloh St., Fruitland Park
Wal-Mart, 550 U.S. Highway 27, Clermont (Four Corners)
Treadway Elementary School, 10619 Treadway School Road, Leesburg

A Tire Amnesty Day is being conducted as part of the cleanup event. Residents can dispose of up to 24 passenger tires for free from 8 am to 5 pm on October 5 at the Lake County Solid Waste Facility located at 13130 County Landfill Road in Tavares. Tires will also be accepted at three of the cleanup event sites 9 am to noon:

Eastlake Community Park
Wal-Mart Clermont (Four Corners)
Treadway Elementary School

The City of Leesburg is hosting a volunteer cleanup at the following locations:
