A Rich History of Development

The LCRA was conceived with the vision of creating a top-tier venue for rowing and other watersports, in both competitive and recreational settings. Its development was part of a broader effort to revitalize the city of Clermont, which is situated in central Florida, known for its scenic landscapes and rich water resources. Over the years, the facility has grown to become a hub for national and international rowing competitions, attracting athletes and teams from around the world.

One of the most defining features of the LCRA facility is its location. Lake Minneola, with its calm waters and ideal orientation, offers perfect conditions for rowing. The lake is long and wide enough to accommodate multiple rowing teams and races simultaneously, making it one of the best venues for training in the southeastern United States.

World-Class Facilities

The LCRA facility is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities designed to support both elite athletes and recreational users. The centerpiece of the facility is the 2,000-meter racing course, which is certified by the International Rowing Federation (FISA). This makes it a legitimate venue for hosting regattas and large-scale rowing events, including regional, national, and international competitions.

In addition to the rowing course, the facility boasts a variety of amenities designed to enhance the experience of athletes and spectators alike. The venue features well-maintained docks for launching boats, spacious changing rooms, and a fully-equipped boathouse with ample storage space for rowing shells and equipment. There are also coaching areas and classrooms for training and instructional programs, making the facility an ideal place for both experienced rowers and beginners looking to develop their skills.

A Training Ground for Champions

Over the years, LCRA facility has attracted a wide array of athletes, including high school teams, collegiate crews, and professional rowers. It has also served as the site for numerous championship races and training camps for national teams. The facility’s combination of technical infrastructure and natural beauty has made it a preferred training location for athletes seeking optimal conditions to hone their skills.

One notable feature of the LCRA is its accessibility. The facility offers programs and events for all levels of rowers, from novices to elite athletes. Local rowing clubs and organizations frequently use the space for practices, while schools and universities from across the country travel to Clermont for intensive training sessions and competitions. Additionally, the facility hosts public rowing events that attract thousands of spectators, further contributing to the city’s vibrant sports culture.

Community Engagement and Recreation

While the LCRA is renowned for its competitive offerings, it also plays an important role in the local community. The city has made an effort to ensure that the facility serves as a resource for residents, offering recreational rowing programs, summer camps, and other water-based activities that are open to the public.

Residents of Clermont and surrounding areas have the opportunity to participate in rowing lessons, join local rowing teams, or simply enjoy the lake’s beauty with casual boat rentals. The facility offers a welcoming environment for people of all ages and skill levels, fostering a sense of community and encouraging healthy outdoor activities.

Furthermore, the LCRA facility is frequently used as a venue for other water sports like kayaking, canoeing, and dragon boating. The expansive grounds and picturesque setting also make it a popular location for events, such as festivals and community gatherings, providing opportunities for individuals to connect and celebrate together.

Environmental Commitment

The LCRA is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The facility works closely with local organizations to maintain the ecological health of Lake Minneola, ensuring that the waters remain clear and clean for both human and wildlife use. The facility also emphasizes eco-friendly practices, from the use of energy-efficient lighting to waste reduction efforts, in order to minimize its environmental footprint.

A Bright Future Ahead

The future of the LCRA looks bright, with plans to continue expanding its offerings and improve its infrastructure. Upcoming projects include enhancements to the facility’s amenities and the addition of more spectator seating to accommodate larger crowds during major events. These improvements will help ensure that the facility remains a top destination for rowing competitions and training, attracting even more athletes from around the globe.

In addition to its continued focus on competitive rowing, the facility aims to further its outreach efforts to the local community by expanding its programs and making rowing accessible to an even wider audience. Whether it’s through school partnerships, youth development programs, or public outreach, the Clermont Rowing Facility is committed to building a lifelong love of the sport and creating opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in rowing and water-based activities.

Conclusion

At a recent Clermont City Council workshop, discussions surrounding the future of Clermont’s rowing facility intensified, with stakeholders weighing in on its economic significance and long-term viability.

A Major Rowing Event in the Works

Lake County Commissioner Kirby Smith announced that a project is in development to bring a major rowing event to the county, boasting an estimated $20 million economic impact. While Clermont remains a potential host location, the event will be held elsewhere in the county if necessary. Commissioner Smith emphasized the county’s forward-thinking approach to investment dollars, stating that past decisions will not dictate future funding.

The financial stipulations tied to the rowing facility were also highlighted, as the Tourist Development Council funds require that the building remain a rowing facility for at least three years, or the allocated funds must be returned. “The purpose of the building is for rowing, nothing else,” Kirby stated.

LCRA’s Role and Economic Impact

Mark Vantrease, President of the Lake County Rowing Association (LCRA), presented the history of the organization’s agreements with the city. He emphasized the need to clarify the city’s expectations for the club moving forward. The LCRA generated over $9 million in economic impact during its first five years, according to LCRA records compiled by councilmember Strange during her leadership role at LCRA.

Mayor Tim Murray voiced support for a long-term contract with LCRA, arguing that stability is essential for the club’s planning and sustainability. “It’s only fair,” he stated.

Leadership and Governance Concerns:

Strange’s connection to the rowing club has raised questions about potential conflict of interest. She previously served on the board of LCRA, which may not be advantageous to its current board and its leasing agreement.

As the debate over the rowing facility and city governance unfolds, questions remain about how personal and professional affiliations may be shaping policy decisions in Clermont.

The next City Council Meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 11 at 6:30 pm in City Hall.

Two separate groups of high school kids worked with their coaches to break internationally set records over the past week. Led by Coaching Director Justin Knust and Recruiting Coordinator Matt Outlaw, they researched what it would take to break the current global indoor rowing records before the end of their most recent winter school break.

Record-Breaking South Lake Area Athletes: The first team with 10 local area high school athletes consisted of 6 men and 4 women. They broke the previous 24-hour indoor rowing record by taking shift turns to row 363,828 meters which is about 226 miles. The previous 24-hour record of 351,050 meters was held by a New Jersey Rowing Club. The second record-breaking LCRA team of 24 talented athletes targeted one million meters. Their team continuously rowed in shifts for 67 hours and 18 minutes to break their world record. The previous one million meters record was accomplished in 71 hours and 15 minutes.

World Record Team Members include Chloe Phelps, Violet Hewett, Kamryn Packney, Catherine Hann, Chloe Register, Marissa Campbell, Anders Williams, Courtney Burgess, Alexandra Burgess, Ryan Yates, Chandler Sapp, Corban Braley, Jonah Furukawa, David West, Matt Tollini, Jackson Cheplick, Garrett Hofer, Brady Ault, Chris Blake, Josh Thompson, Bryson Gonzales, Adesh Rambaran, James Kay and Elijah Miller.

Clermont & South Lake County Rowing: While the record-breaking teams were all middle and high school students, they also offer adult rowing lessons, training and competitions. This club has started to grow in popularity, yet it is still a small and relatively unknown organization. They are hoping to double to 200 middle and high school students by spring 2021. Their potential remains unlimited with year-round indoor and outdoor Florida rowing.

High School Opportunities & Scholarships: Currently, fifty percent of all LCRA high school women earn a college scholarship. They actively recruit from the 3 local high schools with Open Houses and lunch presentations, by sharing their story with the many advantages for young athletes. What is most interesting is the extraordinary scholarship opportunities LCRA provides. Last year 4 local seniors graduated with rowing scholarships to colleges. Four more are now being recruited with valuable scholarships to colleges for next year.

At the time, a lack of facilities and limited equipment did not stop them from sharing their passion for the sport. In 2011, the Lake County Rowing Association was launched. In 2015, the City of Clermont and Lake County, Florida helped to share their commitment for growing the sport of rowing on our local waterways when the City built the spacious new Clermont Boathouse. They have hosted several various regattas, as well as the annual Leader of the Lake Competition. LCRA has been the host and temporary home to multiple National Rowing Teams. Justin Knust has rowed in Orange County with the OARS — Orange Area Rowing Association. He rowed and coached in Doctor Phillips High School as well as for the University of Florida.

Adult Masters Rowing: Adult rowing is available for all athletic backgrounds and ages over 18 and those not in high school. LCRA offers a variety of opportunities to match any skill level or competitive interest. They welcome beginners, experienced, ex-collegiate and club rowers from other programs worldwide who are ready to jump into training for competitive rowing. Clermont is the perfect place to get on the water with rowers at any experience level.

They will need to be ranked in the top 3 teams in their Southeast Region, with rowing clubs from North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. They are also expanding their relationships with other rowing clubs. For example, Hobart & Williams College from Geneva, New York regularly trains here each winter.

Concept 2 has become the most popular indoor oar of choice for training among the LCRA and most world-class rowers. The Concept 2 Indoor Rower is the best-selling rowing machine in the world and used here in Clermont every day as well as across the globe by Olympic athletes, cardiac rehab patients, individuals at home and every caliber of rower in-between. Their primary goal remains to promote and encourage the growth of indoor and outdoor rowing as a lifelong activity.
Lake County Rowing Association: All LCRA programs take place on beautiful Lake Minneola near Downtown Clermont. As a nonprofit 501-C3 LCRA works very hard to help our community. They have over 60 high school students, 35 middle school students and 25 people on the adult team with plenty of helpful parents and volunteers. LCRA offers a complete training and education program for only $800 per semester, with all training, coaching, complete travel and competition costs included.
