Long-time South Lake resident Robby Walker, age 52, father of six, developed a fever, tested positive for COVID-19 which rapidly progressed into pneumonia in both lungs. His prognosis wasn’t good.

His wife Susan wouldn’t give up hope. Robby needed ECMO treatment for life support. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a technique providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange or perfusion to sustain life. All hospitals in Florida offering the treatment were full. The family called 169 hospitals as well as contacted news and social media platforms pleading for help. Finally, her prayers and cry for help were heard and Robby was flown to a hospital in Connecticut for the needed ECMO treatment.

On September 2, Robby was taken off ECMO.  After months in the hospital, he has lost 50 pounds and remains on physical therapy, BUT he is on the road to recovery.

Robby will be released from the Connecticut hospital within the next few days and begin his journey back home to his family and friends which may not have had such a happy ending without the faith, hope, and tenacity of his wife.
