Award-Winning Cookbook Author Warren Caterson shows you how to transform traditional southern dishes into healthier ones without losing their essence. He will share dozens of kitchen tips, cooking hints and humorous anecdotes about the joys and challenges of healthy southern cooking for two. Learn a bit of southern cuisine history, and how the basic ingredients for traditional dishes are inherently healthy (it’s the traditional preparation of those ingredients that can lead to health problems). You will learn to make easy changes to southern cuisine that will make them much healthier while still embodying the delicious flavor, and more.

The African American Book Club of Clermont was founded in 2005 by Gloria Pasteur. Each year the group makes a substantial donation of books to a local library or school in the South Lake area. Since their formation, the group has donated over a thousand books.

In the past, other Lake County Libraries have benefited from their generosity, and this year the Minneola Schoolhouse Library was the recipient of so gracious a gift. Gloria and the group’s current president, Joann Everett chose the titles for this year’s campaign and delivered the items to the grateful little library. The books will be available to check out the first week of March.

The Lake County Library System’s mission is to provide and promote life-enriching experiences that exceed expectations for Lake County residents and visitors. Children of all ages are invited to chill out at the library in January with a variety of cool programs tailor-made for some wintertime fun. Just because we live in Central Florida doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the blustery themes of winter.

Tuesday, January 7 from 4-5 pm

The entire family can warm up to cozy reading sessions at the library with our PAWS therapy dogs. PAWS Therapy Dogs provide compassionate canine community service work by visiting libraries, schools, senior centers and nursing homes. Children, teens and adults can hang out, pet and read a book with these trained therapy pups.

This summer Commander GiGi kicks off a comedic race to space with her cosmic clown and canine space cadets. Expect fun with juggernaut juggling, mystifying magic, and celestial comedy. Follow along as Private Bucky and Astrodog Zeus show off their circus skills and death-defying dog tricks, in an attempt to prove they have what it takes to boldly go where no clown (or canine) has gone before!

The Friends of the Minneola Schoolhouse Library are having their big summer Book, Bake & Craft sale, Saturday, June 8 from 8 am-2 pm. It is the library’s biggest fundraiser, and all the proceeds benefit the library. We are still looking for vendors for the sale. So if you can get the word out that would be great.

New Beginnings is a non-profit organization that offers emergency food and other social services for those in need. Their mission is to empower people to overcome the pain of poverty and the alienation of homelessness. The New Beginnings Thrift Shop & Food Pantry is located at 415 Citrus Tower Blvd, Clermont, FL 34711, and is open Monday – Friday from 10 am – 5 pm, you can reach them at 352-404-6946. On Saturday mornings from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm they provide “Helping Hands” outreach at the Clermont Winn-Dixie parking lot on Highway 50.
