For most of recorded time, women didn’t leave much of a paper trail, but they still had remarkable stories to tell. Although it may appear that they haven’t left any documents behind, deeper research into underutilized records will often lead to a better understanding of the women in our family trees. In this talk, we’ll explore a variety of records, and also look at local history, the law, politics, and the cataclysmic events that confronted them to help us bring their hidden stories to light. Presentation takes place on Thursday, September 12th at 4:30PM Eastern time.

Speaker Pam Vestal is a professional genealogist and speaker who turned her focus to her longtime love of genealogy after a 20-year writing career. Her articles have appeared in the National Genealogical Society Magazine and The Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly, and her lectures take her from coast to coast. Pam specializes in conducting genealogical research and then transforming that information into illustrated stories that even non-genealogists can enjoy.

To attend, visit Cooper Memorial Library (2525 Oakley Seaver Drive, Clermont, FL) in room 108 for complimentary admission—arriving early is recommended to secure a seat. Alternatively, you can register for a Zoom link to participate in the program from the comfort of your home.
Lisa Oberg will be presenting this interesting topic not normally discussed in Family History. Have you ever thought about the events outside wars, famine and political strife that may have persuaded your ancestors to make changes to their lives? Come listen to Lisa as she tells us about Blizzards, earthquakes, fire, floods, hurricanes, and more. Our ancestors experienced many natural disasters which affected both their safety and livelihoods. Newspaper accounts offer important insight into these events, but many other sources can help you understand these catastrophes and enrich your understanding of the social history of your ancestors, and the sometimes calamitous times in which they lived. Lisa Oberg is a Librarian in Seattle Washington who is an avid Family historian.

The presentation will start at 5 pm on February 8th. Pastfinders of the South Lake County Genealogical Society will be hosting a meet & greet before the presentation. Refreshments will be available at 4 pm at the Cooper Memorial Library in the Genealogy room located on the second floor. If you would like to join this program via Zoom, The Zoom window will open at 4:30 pm EST with some announcements. After Lisa Oberg speaks, she will answer questions from the audience. Please visit PastfindersSLC.org to register for this event. Also, find us on Facebook at PastfindersofSL. Cooper Memorial Library is located on the campus of the Lake-Sumter College in Clermont, FL.

Mark your calendar to attend the Pastfinders Cultural and Genealogical Community Showcase at Cooper Memorial Library. Earlier this year, Pastfinders of South Lake County Genealogical Society scheduled a day to celebrate Family. It was supposed to be a way for the community to learn about local groups who celebrate and nurture ethnicity and culture. However, hurricane Ian canceled this event.

Since then, the Pastfinders of South Lake has been negotiating with the groups participating in this event to choose a new date that will be agreeable to all participating parties. They decided on Saturday, March 25 as the best date to regroup. There will be Scottish Highland Dancing, a documentary called Finding Samuel Lowe and several local groups like the DAR, SAR, Jewish Friends of Kings Ridge, Caribbean American Association and so much more.

The public is invited to come in native dress or the colors of their ancestral flags.
