The South Lake Art League (SLAL) hosted a completion celebration for up-and-coming young artists on Tuesday, December 30^th. The 8–12-year-old art students enjoyed the opportunity to show off their talent to friends and family with displays of the creative watercolor paintings that the students completed in a multi-week class.

Many of the students shared stories of what they learned and what their aspirations were for the thought invoking world of art in the future. Under the guidance of SLAL instructors Phyllis Walker and Lisa Harris, the students learned of color contrasts, free hand painting, working together and much more.

Two sisters attending the classes, 10-year-old Vayda and 8-year-old Livey Zentmeyer, are returning students to the SLAL’s numerous classes offered throughout the year to both adults and youth. The sisters were eager to reveal their works to parents, Josh and Melanie, while outlining the family’s deep passion for art and photography. Melanie said that the family has created a home studio in their garage to continue the artistical interest of the girls, which includes sketching, drawing, water painting, and ceramic pottery- a favorite of Melanie’s also.

Instructor Lisa Harris complimented all of the young students and their interest in working together while helping each other achieve individual goals. “They are all so well behaved, attentive and willing to help other students when obstacles arise in their works,” says Lisa.

The South Lake Art League (SLAL) hosted its 5th Annual High School Art Display on Saturday, November 1, at the League’s gallery, located at 776 West Montrose Street in historic downtown Clermont.

Before the opening of the exhibit, the League held a scheduled board meeting, during which Clermont Mayor Tim Murry made a surprise visit with a special presentation from the City of Clermont. Mayor Murry presented a Proclamation of Appreciation recognizing the SLAL for its community engagement and artistic contributions to the city. These include providing artwork for city buildings, public spaces, and special initiatives such as the police department’s children’s advocacy room and the participant arch for the annual Fallen Heroes 5K. The proclamation officially declared November 1, 2025, as South Lake Art League Day in the City of Clermont.

Following the presentation, students from area high schools gathered at the gallery to admire the creative works of their peers enrolled in local art programs. The colorful and imaginative pieces will remain on display through November 16.

Among the attending student artists were Remington Hayes of East Ridge High School and Teagan Pittman of South Lake High School, both proud to discuss their entries.

Remington, a first-year art student under the direction of teacher Nesly Latorre, described the piece as a “wood design” enhanced with snakes in the foreground to deepen the woodland theme. “I wanted to show creativity in the wood design while adding color for enhancement,” Remington explained.

Teagan Pittman, a 10th-grade student taught by Jennifer Vida at South Lake High School, shared that her piece, titled A Bigger World, illustrates insects and crustaceans coexisting in harmony. “It’s a family trait to be an artist in our family,” Pittman said, noting that she’s been passionate about art since childhood and hopes to continue pursuing her creative talents.

The next student showcase at the South Lake Art League will feature artwork from elementary school students and will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 10 am to noon.

The exhibit dazzled visitors with its variety and artistry, transforming the gallery into a kaleidoscope of textures and techniques. League President Lisa Harris kicked off the afternoon by introducing the show’s tireless chairperson, Kathy Henderson, whose enthusiasm and organization helped make the event a success. Kathy even treated guests to delightful refreshments, adding a touch of sweetness (and hospitality!) to the day.

A highlight of the event was the juried competition, generously sponsored by Rose and Eric Stasuk, who provided beautiful ribbons and cash prizes for the winners.

Oskin’s award-winning fine art photography—known for its vivid colors and abstract expressionist style—has stood out at multiple League shows and Clermont Downtown Partnership events, earning him top honors in the Photography Category two years in a row. These eye-catching works, which Oskin refers to as “posterizations,” have helped his reputation as a creative artist in the local art scene.

A true lifelong artist, Oskin’s passion began early. His first solo exhibition was hosted at the age of 7, when his elementary school recognized his budding talent. That early encouragement sparked a career that would span commercial and fine arts, photography, marketing, and journalism. He holds a degree in Graphic Design in Advertising and studied under legendary photographers and designers at the State University College of New York at Buffalo.

“My Art Beautique work is very stylized as abstract photo impressionism,” says Oskin. “Photography lets us capture the intangible—the fleeting beauty of a sunrise, a joyful moment, or a powerful emotion. It allows us to preserve memory and meaning in a single frame.”

Over the years, Oskin’s work has been showcased in galleries and museums across North America and Europe, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, one of the top modern art museums in the world. He has also held key marketing roles in the beauty and art industries, including serving as Director of Marketing for Circle Fine Art, where he worked with world-renowned artists like Peter Max, Erté, and LeRoy Neiman.

Oskin remains deeply rooted in the South Lake community. He is the founder of Art Beautique, a virtual gallery celebrating beauty in all forms—nature, glamour, women, animals, and spirituality. He is also the founder of Champions for Clermont, a voluntary media initiative highlighting local people, events, and organizations.Currently, Oskin has several pieces on display at the Clermont City Center as part of an invitational South Lake Art League exhibit. He invites art lovers to stop by and see not only his work but also that of many other talented local artists.

Being part of the South Lake Art League is especially meaningful to Oskin. “It’s a wonderful way to connect with other artists, to share ideas, learn new techniques, and give back to the community,” he says. He encourages emerging artists to get involved. “Study, experiment, and find your own voice through art. The League offers a great platform to grow and be seen.”

With more than 50 years of experience as a professional artist, photographer, marketer, and journalist, Larry Oskin continues to create, inspire, and elevate the local arts scene. His message is clear: Art is not just a medium—it’s a mission.

The South Lake Art League (SLAL) has a long history in the historical downtown district of Clermont. The Art League, located at 776 West Montrose Street, has been encouraging and promoting all forms of art and the appreciation of it throughout the South Lake Community since 1966.

Classes are offered to all age groups, including local elementary school-aged students. Students from Lost Lake Elementary, South Lake Montessori, Minneola Charter, Aurelia Cole Academy, and SLAL’s own kids’ art class will be displaying their art at the gallery and in the studio throughout February.

Under the direction of Marie Dudek Brown, art instructor, Lisa Harris, SLAL President and instructor, and Kathy Henderson, show chairperson, the students, and parents gathered on Saturday, January 18^th to kick off the display showcase. The students and guests were honored with art theme descriptions, accolades, and encouragement for the students from the staff. While enjoying the opportunity to outline their hard work, the students were eager to explain their accomplishments to parents and guests in attendance.

One such student, Beyla Forthun, a student of South Lake Montessori, was pleased to show off her team’s work which was themed “Ancient Chinese Art” and highlighted a 2021 drama titled Court Lady. Beyla, with the assistance of her mom, Megan Moore, described the four pictures that students on her class team recreated from the storyline that included a merchant’s daughter who becomes a female official and a playful marshal’s son who falls in love with her.

Student age groups are 4-7 years of age and 8-13 years of age. Classes for all ages are held year-round and are available in a variety of themes, including acrylic painting, zentangle art, fiber art, art journaling, and mixed media art. The villagers (Mayan Nahua people) then, mostly women, painted what

they saw around them, birds, lizards, flowers, etc with vibrant colors. Since there were no paints, they used colors from fruit & vegetables.

The students at the South Lake Art League used grocery bags that had been soaked in water and then ironed. Each student painted one of his/her favorite thing on their ‘bark paper.

South Lake Art League (SLAL) president Lisa Harris and show director Kathy Henderson announce that its Elementary School Art Show is now on display through February 5th at the South Lake Art Gallery, 776 West Montrose Street, downtown Clermont. The show has approximately 41 unique pieces of art being exhibited from Clermont area elementary schools.

The League is very excited to have Clermont Elementary participating with the help of Dr. Alynne Solway, the pre-K teacher at Clermont Elementary and Patti Commerford the art teacher. The CES students are certainly wonderful little artists as are all our entries.

Jennifer Waalewyn teaches art at Minneola Charter School, kindergarten through 5th grade. Her students have done some James Rizzi art in watercolor, overlapping warm and cool colors on leaves and some Highwaymen art in acrylic. Thirty of her fifth graders will be displaying their art at the upcoming Highwayman show in Tavares from February 3rd through March.

Emily Carlson has been the art teacher at Lost Lake Elementary for six years. Emily has given her fifth-grade students free choice of ambiguous words to use in their own inventive art pieces in watercolor, pastel, colored pencil and acrylic.

Tracy McCoy is the art and elementary school teacher of 1st through 6th graders at South Lake Montessori. Her students have studied famous art pieces and duplicated them using acrylic, pastel and watercolor, and their very own creativity.

The SLAL is grateful to these wonderful teachers for sharing their student’s art and the league invites the community to come into the gallery to view and appreciate the art of these talented young artists.

The next show at the South Lake Art League Gallery will be the photo show beginning March 4th.  Registrations can be found on the website or in the gallery.
