Orlando Health South Lake Hospital has been named a Level 1 maternal care verified facility by The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) Verification program.

The program, offered in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), provides an objective assessment of a facility’s capabilities and verifies that a hospital has the expertise, equipment and resources in place for a patient’s specific needs and risk level. The hospital underwent a comprehensive on-site review to verify the level of care provided.

As a Level 1 facility, Orlando Health South Lake Hospital has demonstrated it can care for low to moderate-risk pregnancies, detect, stabilize and initiate management of unanticipated maternal-fetal or neonatal challenges that occur throughout pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period until the patient can be transferred to a facility where specialized maternity care is available.

“Parents and families place their wholehearted trust in us during one of the most important and pivotal moments of their lives,” said Lance Sewell, president, Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. “This designation reinforces that we have the expertise and resources to meet their needs, respond to the unexpected and deliver exceptional care for our Lake County community for generations to come.”

Orlando Health South Lake Hospital Center for Women and Babies, part of Orlando Health Women’s Institute, offers total, trusted care for women, from pre-pregnancy through post-partum care. Board-certified obstetricians delivering at the hospital care for both moms and babies before, during and after delivery. Nurses and lactation consultants also offer the support and resources moms need to be successful.

As the trusted community hospital in South Lake County, Orlando Health South Lake Hospital has provided healthcare to residents for more than 75 years. It is also the only Leapfrog Group A-rated hospital in Lake County.

Orlando Health has opened a fifth location for its Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers at Orlando Health South Lake Hospital, designed to offer health and wellness services for patients after they are discharged from a hospital and to assist with complex pharmacy needs.

Patients without a primary care provider or who cannot book a follow-up appointment within seven days of discharge can be referred to the centers on the campuses of Orlando Health South Lake Hospital, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital and the former site of Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital.

“Follow-up appointments help ensure patients stay on the right path to healing and reduce the possibility of readmission, said Omar Qazi, MD, medical director, Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers. “Our centers were created to bridge that gap, offering personalized support and coordination to ease a patient’s transition back home.”

Services at the centers will include post-discharge exams, medication management, care coordination services and disease prevention education. All locations are staffed with advanced practice practitioners, registered nurses, care coordinators, pharmacists and skilled support team members.

The centers are designed to support the necessary stepdown care for patients leaving the hospital, but are not intended to replace primary care, which requires a long-term relationship with a patient. Patients will always be redirected to their aligned provider after a visit to one of the centers. If a patient does not have an established provider, they will be connected to providers who participate in Orlando Health’s clinically integrated network, known as Orlando Health Network.

The hospital was also presented with the elite “straight A” designation and holds the only A grade in Lake County

Orlando Health South Lake Hospital has earned its 13th consecutive ‘A’ grade from the Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety and transparency in the U.S. health system.

“To receive 13 straight A’s from the Leapfrog Group really speaks to the seamless collaboration and teamwork that occurs between our providers, clinicians and team members,” said Lance Sewell, president of Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. “This recognition reinforces their dedication to our patients and to delivering the highest level of care every day.”

Orlando Health South Lake Hospital has earned several recognitions this year. U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, named the hospital as high-performing in six categories for common adult procedures and conditions. The hospital was also awarded the Get with the Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. Additionally, the hospital’s interventional cardiac care unit received a silver-level Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses in October.

All Orlando Health legacy hospitals received ‘A’ grades, which include Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital, Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital and Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections, and injuries that cause more than 500 mortalities a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

“Award recognizes extraordinary nurses “Words cannot express how amazing Ruben is to his patients and visiting family,” writes the wife of a patient at Orlando Health South Lake Hospital when nominating Ruben Perez, RN for the Daisy Award. On Friday, May 12, Rubin was honored as the Daisy Award recipient with a special certificate, a lapel pin and a ‘Healer’s Touch’ sculpture to symbolize his extraordinary contribution to the nursing profession. In keeping with the Daisy Award tradition, cinnamon rolls were provided for all of the nurses on his unit to celebrate the entire team.

As a nurse on the hospital’s clinical decision unit (CDU) for nearly four years, Ruben provides compassionate comprehensive care to patients who present in the emergency department. His responsibilities include assessing patient care needs, prioritizing patients based on acuity level and assisting physicians during examinations, treatments and procedures.

“Ruben is a winner,” said Alisa Lewis, RN, nursing operations manager, Orlando Health South Lake CDU. “Not only does he care for patients and families who are often distressed about their loved ones being in the hospital, he also serves as a preceptor, helping to train new RNs or those new to this unit.”

The Daisy Award was established in 1999 by the Daisy Foundation, an organization also founded that year to honor compassionate nurses, thereby reinforcing the importance of compassion in healthcare and shining a light on what is right with nursing. The award recognizes nurses for six specific qualities: 1) passion for nursing or the care provided, 2) empathy, 3) trust/teamwork of patient, family and peers, 4) admirable attributes, 5) love for patients and the nursing profession and 6) selflessness.

What is known today as Orlando Health South Lake was first an idea birthed in 1938 by a group of young women from the Clermont area who saw a great need for a hospital to meet emergency healthcare needs. Three-quarters of a century later, what was once a small, 9-bed hospital in a rural community is now a 150-acre health, education and wellness campus trusted to provide the best healthcare possible while also promoting healthy lifestyles among the residents of South Lake County.

The partial closure will prevent traffic from traveling east on Don Wickham Drive toward the hospital’s main entrance, however, all traffic to the Orlando Health South Lake Hospital Center for Women’s Health via West Don Wickham Drive at the intersection of Citrus Tower Boulevard will remain open to OB/GYN patients.

The partial closure of Don Wickham Drive and temporary adjustments to traffic flow and parking will allow for the realignment of Don Wickham Drive to open at Legends Way, creating a new direct entrance to Orlando Health South Lake and added parking in addition to the construction of a 95-bed patient tower. A temporary main entrance will be located to the west of the original main entrance, directly under the “Orlando Health | South Lake Hospital” sign on the south-facing side of the hospital and can be accessed from West Oakley Seaver Drive via Citrus Tower Boulevard or the section of Don Wickham Drive that remains open.

The temporary entrance will serve as the new main entrance until the tower expansion is complete and will offer free, daily valet services for patients and guests. All discharges will take place to the west of the temporary main entrance at the outpatient entrance which can be accessed from Don Wickham Drive via Oakley Seaver Drive. The alternate entry routes from Oakley Seaver Drive will provide all guests and patients with direct access to the hospital’s new temporary entrance in addition to the following:
