South Lake Pain Institute, a multi-site pain management practice serving Central Florida with offices in Clermont and Orlando is pleased to announce the Florida Board of Medicine changes to allow for pain management telehealth in the wake of COVID-19.

The Florida Board of Medicine has approved an exception for the next 30-days to allow pain management physicians to prescribe controlled substances without a physical examination, but rather via telehealth visit. Telehealth allows the provider and patient to connect virtually using a smartphone or internet-enabled device.

Dr. Julie Saranita, D.O. says, “We applaud the decision of the Florida Board of Medicine. A large volume of our patient population is elderly or immunocompromised-a weakened immune system due to underlying conditions. Nationally we are seeing an uptick in COVID-19 cases so everyone is providing care in an abundance of caution, this another way we can do that and ease patient fear.”

Dr. Julio Paez, M.D. adds,” When we say ‘telehealth,’ we’re basically saying that we’re using technology to deliver or collaborate in health care. South Lake Pain Institute has been a leader in evidence-based techniques to improve patient outcomes and experience. The key message to our patients is we are not closing down, we are here for you, but if you don’t have to be here, we want to protect you and your families and our workforce by not having unnecessary exposure.”

South Lake Pain Institute, a multi-site pain management practice serving Central Florida with offices in Clermont and Orlando, is pleased to announce the addition of Stephanie McShan, LCSW, MEd to the practice.

Stephanie McShan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2015. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida and master’s degrees in both Social Work and Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida. Stephanie also received a certification in Children Services from the University of Central Florida. Stephanie has worked in both hospital and clinic settings most recently in the capacity of Mental Health Provider at one of Central Florida’s Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers for the last 2 years. In her career, Stephanie has worked with patients with varying mental health disorders providing individual counseling. She provided mental health assessments and diagnosis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and crisis intervention as well as served as a liaison between her patients and community resources.

Dr. Julie Saranita, D.O. says, “South Lake Pain Institute was founded from the desire to create a comprehensive pain management practice providing the highest level of care to those suffering from acute and chronic pain. As the more than 76 million baby boomers continue to age, many of them will increasingly face the aches and pains that come with chronic health issues. And as medical and mental health providers are aware, mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and addiction can also cause or heighten physical pain. This makes the provision of psychoeducation essential for patients with chronic pain. We are proud to have Stephanie McShan provide this support to our patients.”

Dr. Julio Paez, M.D. adds, “”Over the past decade, South Lake Pain Institute has evolved and grown to meet the needs of our patients. This growth continues with the addition of Stephanie McShan to our provider team. Stephanie brings a wealth of experience and expertise to South Lake Pain Institute as well as a commitment to deliver compassionate, comprehensive and collaborative care.”

Stephanie McShan, LCSW, MEd will be accepting patients beginning February 5, 2020 at South Lake Pain Institute, Clermont, FL.

Cannibas (marijuana) is a plant that has been used for centuries as a natural way to relieve pain, to relax, and get high. It an alternative to the highly addictive opioids.

Medical Marijuana and Chronic Pain

There are more than 100 cannabinoids, or natural chemicals, in marijuana. Each of them works a little bit differently in the human body. There are two cannabinoids known as CBD and THC that help pain management. CBD has recently been legalized but because THC makes you high, it’s hasn’t yet been approved, though both have benefits that can help people control pain.

THCV: Strongly psychoactive (inducers a euphoric high). More strongly psychoactive than THC, but the duration of effects is about half as long. Typically occurs in only trace amounts in cannabis. Pronounced energetic effects. Found to effectively counter anxiety, stress, and panic disorders without suppressing emotion. Reduces Tremors associated with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological disorders. Diminishes appetite. Stimulates bone growth.

CBDV – Non-psychoactive (does not induce a euphoric high). Demonstrates promise in treating seizures

CBN – Mildly to non-intoxicating (does not induce a euphoric high). Typically occurs in only trace amounts in cannabis. Occurs as a result of THC degradation. Most sedating of all the cannabinoids. Demonstrates promise in treating insomnia, glaucoma, and pain.

CBD/THC are alternatives to prescription medications like opioids for chronic pain conditions. It hasn’t yet been proven to cure but does relieve the side-effects of a wide variety of illnesses including cancer, neurological disorders, seizures, arthritis. It’s an alternative to some highly addictive pharma drugs (opioids) and, though the research is ongoing, it may prove to become the natural drug of choice.

There are many ways to use Cannabis. You can smoke it, eat it, or apply it as an ointment. CBDs are legal and can be purchased over the counter, however, Dr. Paez advises that CBDs should be bought from a reliable source. The South Lake Pain Institute, located at 2440 Hooks Street, Clermont, can advise and prescribe. He also mentioned Luckys as a reliable place to purchase CBDs.

It affects more Americans than diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease combined. It can result in extremely long and costly hospital stays and a decreased ability in daily functioning.

Acute and chronic pain is a sad fact of life for almost one-third of the population. With September designated as “National Pain Awareness Month”, the health care team at South Lake Pain Institute hopes to grow awareness through education.

Dr. Julio, Paez, M.D.

“About 100 million people in the United States suffer from chronic pain— that’s 1 in 3, more than stroke, heart disease or cancer combined. For those living with persistent pain conditions, they often feel isolated as others cannot comprehend the impact pain has on every aspect of life. We know chronic pain prevents people from enjoying a full life as work, family and social life are impacted,” states Dr. Julio, Paez, M.D

“We talk a lot about health in the United States, but we don’t talk much about chronic pain.

Dr. Julie Saranita, D.O.

As Americans continue to age, pain and pain management are becoming even bigger facts of life as bodies begin to show the wear and tear of decades of use,” adds Dr. Julie Saranita, D.O.

Throughout the month of September, South Lake Pain Institute will be promoting awareness and education by discussing chronic pain with healthcare professionals and community members. The community can participate by following South Lake Pain Institute on Facebook to engage in important discussions, ask questions and share in promoting awareness to chronic pain.
