For the month of March 2026, Clermont Garden Club member Sally Matson loaned a phalaenopsis orchid to Cooper Memorial Library. Also known as a “moth orchid,” this plant is very easy to grow. Orchids have the potential to live many years with proper care, and are a popular houseplant. The best place for an orchid is near an east or west facing window for the indirect light, avoiding harsh direct sun which can burn the leaves. Ideal spots for best humidity are kitchens and bathrooms. Water thoroughly when dry, every 1-2 weeks. Never let the plant sit in water. Do not use ice cubes! After flowering, cut the flower stem to promote growth.

Carmen Colby loaned a calla lily to Clermont City Hall. Calla lilies are not true lilies but are related to Caladium and Jack-in-the-pulpit. Grow calla lilies in at least 6 hours per day of bright indirect light. Full sun can cause the plant to become sunburned. Calla lilies like a lot of irrigation and yet too much will result in root rot. Make sure your container has good drainage holes since overly wet soil can foster fungal disease. Prune dying blooms and any dead/yellowing leaves as needed. Leave the healthy green leaves post bloom to continue to photosynthesize and store energy for next year’s bloom.
