Lake County’s 8th Annual Landscape & Garden Fair offers free nature-based activities for the entire family next weekend.
The event will be held Saturday, April 13 from 9 am – 4 pm and Sunday, April 14 from 10 am – 3 pm at the Lake County Extension Center’s Discovery Gardens, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Discovery Gardens is nestled on more than four acres and features 24 themed gardens, including a string of lush courtyards and five specially designed children’s gardens.
For kids, festival activities will include the Children’s Passport, with stops at five gardens, including the Hydroponics, Water-Wise, Cottage Garden, Palm Walk, and Rain Garden. Children can also participate in the Maze Scavenger Hunt, complete with prizes.
A special butterfly release is scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, April 13 for the first 50 children. Children will learn about the lifecycle of butterflies while receiving a hands-on opportunity to release them into the nectar garden and watch them fly and feed on sugar water and nectar plants.
Sponsored by Lake County, The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS,) Lake County Extension and the Lake County Master Gardeners, the festival attracts thousands of guests annually to hear expert speakers present on a variety of topics, including landscape design, vegetable gardening, and orchids.
Visitors also have an opportunity to browse landscaping materials, native plants, fruit trees and other goods available for purchase by local vendors.
