Starting this fall, prospective students looking to attend a college with an honors program will be able to do so without leaving Lake and Sumter Counties.

The development of LSSC’s Honors Program represents an opportunity for students in our community to receive all of the perks one would typically expect from a university honors college for a community college price,” says Amber Karlins, honors program coordinator.

LSSC’s Honors Program will feature an innovative, integrated curriculum taught by award-winning faculty and will provide students with extensive opportunities to develop deeper learning through research, service, real-world experience, and engaging extra- and co-curricular activities.

“In creating the honors program, the college is seeking to better meet the needs of high-performing students in Lake and Sumter Counties, providing them with educational opportunities that were previously unavailable in our area,” Karlins said.

In addition to providing honors students with a series of exciting educational opportunities, LSSC will also be giving merit scholarships to each honors student in recognition of his or her academic dedication and prowess. An articulation agreement has also been developed that will allow graduates of LSSC’s Honors Program to transfer directly into UCF’s Honors College, an opportunity that, prior to the creation of the honors program, was unavailable to LSSC graduates. An articulation agreement with Stetson University is in the final stages of development.

In order to be eligible for admission to LSSC’s Honors Program, prospective students must have at least a 3.5 unweighted high school GPA, documented evidence of academic achievement and readiness, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, supervisor, school official, or community leader. Applications to the program, which must include a short essay, can be found at www.lssc.edu/honors.

Those interested in the program can find out more by attending a live online information session, which will be hosted on Facebook Live (facebook.com/lakesumterstatecollege) April 18th at 5:30 pm. Additional information can also be obtained by contacting honors@lssc.edu.
