The Groveland High School Alumni Association is donating $5,500 to south Lake County charities from money raised at the recent annual alumni reunion.
On Wednesday, Alumni Association board members delivered a $4,000 check for the Shaw Buck Scholarship and a $1,000 check for the Frank B. Farr Jr. Scholarship to the Community Foundation of South Lake County, which administers the scholarships.
The Alumni Association also is donating $500 to the Groveland Historical Society, which runs the Groveland Historical Museum.
“The Groveland High alumni are thrilled to contribute to these charities that are near and dear to us,” said Tim McRae, president of the 2019 reunion.
Groveland High School existed from the school’s earliest years until 1993, when it merged with Clermont High to form South Lake High School.
McRae said this year was the first time the reunion included a silent auction, which helped raise a record amount for the scholarships.
The scholarships are a longstanding tradition for the alumni. Shaw Buck was a revered football coach and teacher at Groveland High for more than 40 years. Scholarship recipients must letter in a sport at South Lake High School and demonstrate strong leadership and moral character.
Frank Farr Jr. was a Groveland High student and son of a former principal. Recipients must be students at South Lake High. The scholarship is based on financial need, academic performance, character and leadership.
