In its July/August edition, District Administration magazine has named Lake County Schools one of 34 “Districts of Distinction,” a national recognition program that began in November 2014.

The program was established by the magazine to honor school districts that are leading the way with new ideas that solve challenges. Honorees are selected based on quantifiable results and the replicability of their initiatives.

The 34 school systems from 19 states honored in this round have launched programs that include partnering with outside organizations for career training, improving literacy, and using music to support at-risk students and English language learners.

Lake County Schools is being recognized for revitalizing the Leesburg High School Construction Academy. With the help of $866,000 in state funding and partnerships with several local businesses, the district added new technology and equipment along with college preparatory and industry certification classes and hands-on training on job sites, to prepare students for lucrative careers and/or higher education after high school. Under the leadership of Superintendent Diane Kornegay and Leesburg High School Principal Michael Randolph, the Academy is thriving as a place where students gain practical job skills and get to know local professionals in the industry who could later become their employers.

“These districts have developed innovative programs to support students in their education and well beyond the classroom,” says JD Solomon, editorial director of District Administration magazine. “We hope our readers are inspired by the efforts of these honorees to create successful initiatives in their own districts.”

A full list of the 2019 honorees is listed on the magazine’sweb site.
