The first things you notice about Sydney are her friendly brown eyes and gentle nature.  These are also helpful assets in her role as a therapy dog.  Thom adopted Sydney, an Australian Sheppard and Chow mix, from a no-kill shelter about two years ago.  Since then Sydney has received training and accreditation as a therapy dog.

With Thom acting as her trainer/handler, her recent visit to an area nursing home brought comfort and smiles to the faces of the residents.  She also visits area schools where the children receive education in the humane treatment of animals and libraries where the children have an opportunity to read to her.

Thom is a passionate advocate of animal rights.  He has adopted several shelter dogs and has volunteered at a local shelter.  Wanting to do even more, Thom and other supporters started the nonprofit organization, Read To Sydney, whose goals are to provide south Lake County with humane education for grade school children, humane education events for the entire family and visits to local nursing homes.
