The UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County, the University of Florida’s local Extension campus in Tavares, will be offering a variety of educational programs for the public during the month of August.
Thursday, August 15 from 10 am – 11 am
Diabetes Class
Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Mia Wilchcombe, will be teaching a diabetes class. This free program will focus on healthy eating and proper nutrition for people diagnosed with diabetes and pre-diabetes. There is no cost to attend but pre-registration is required and can be made online at fcslake.eventbrite.com or by calling the Extension Services office at 352-343-4101.
Saturday, August 17 at 10 am
Building Backyard Habitats
Residential Horticulture Agent Brooke Moffis will be presenting a talk on building backyard habitats. Participants will walk away having developed strategies for attracting butterflies, birds, bats, and bees to their own backyards. Pre-registration is required online at lakegardeningprograms.eventbrite.com for $5 online or $6 at the door.

The Discovery Garden
The Discovery Gardens, a five-acre demonstration garden located adjacent to the Extension Services office will be open the same day as part of the monthly “Saturday in the Gardens” program. Discovery Gardens is also open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and is an ideal venue to take a walk, enjoy a picnic, and get gardening ideas.
Saturday, August 31 from 10 am – 1 pm
The Lake County 4-H Program will be kicking off the new 4-H year with a family-friendly open house from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Discovery Gardens. This event will feature local 4-H clubs advocating for agriculture. Participating families will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some animals, create recycled art, and enjoy a fun scavenger hunt. 4-H, the University of Florida’s positive youth development program, is open to all children ages 5 to 18. If you have ever been curious about what 4-H can offer your family, or what you might be able to offer 4-H as a volunteer, this is an excellent opportunity to meet and greet your local clubs and learn more about the program.
In addition to offering classes, UF/IFAS Lake County Extension is home to experts in nutrition, agriculture, gardening, and youth development who are always happy to answer your questions with research-based solutions. Phone, email, and office consultations are offered free of charge by appointment year-round.
The UF/IFAS Master Gardener Volunteers staff a plant clinic Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm where residents can receive expert help with their lawns and gardens.
