The Montverde Academy Theatre Department is proud to announce that the musical performance of, “Mamma Mia,” featuring the iconic ABBA music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, was nominated for 16 Applause Awards. The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Applause Awards celebrate high school students and teachers involved in musical theater.
The show ran in late February to sold-out audiences. “Mamma Mia” tells the comical story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. This story takes place on a Greek island paradise on the eve of the daughter’s wedding, Sophie, played by Kaylin Gines, who seeks to discover the identity of her father. She has invited three potential candidates (portrayed by Aidan Fracker, Aiden Bjortvedt and Anthony Morehead) from Donna’s, Sophie’s mother played by Peytann Tamasi, past to the island.
The nominations for students include Lead Performers: Kaylin Gines, Peytann Tamasi, Isabella Crider, Judy Hassanein, and Aidan Fracker; Supporting Performer: Anthony Morehead; Dance Performer: Hanna Swidler; Honorable Mention in Performance: Hanna Swidler. Additional nominations include Outstanding Musical; Orchestra; Music Director: Dean Bell; Stage Manager: Valarie Kutemeier; Set Designer: James Erwin; Lighting Designer: Kelly Lemos; and Sound Designer: Cynthia Lu.
