Virtual teacher hiring event planned for June 18

Lake County Schools’ summer hiring events have gone digital. On Thursday, June 18, the district is hosting a virtual teacher hiring event for the upcoming 2020-21 school year from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Potential hires can register online via Eventbrite.

To attract job-seekers, the district is using advertisements created by students.

Quiana Peterson, instructional recruitment partner for Lake County Schools, visited various schools throughout the school year to discuss her job. She challenged students to make their own ads.

“At first it was just an exercise,” said Peterson, “I never intended to post them, but the students really got into it! The ads were so clever and cute, I thought teachers would appreciate seeing an ad from our students.”

One ad says, “Are you a vocabulary word? Cause you are the definition to our success.”

Another reads, “Become an addition to our math teachers” and uses math-related images.

Peterson is hoping the ads will catch the eye of some potential recruits because the demand for teachers remains strong. But with the recommended social distancing measures in place, recruiting efforts have had to change. All summer hiring events will take place online instead of in-person as they traditionally have been. The online events still follow a similar format. Attendees have the chance to learn about each school, meet school leaders via zoom chat, and have a chance to interview for potential positions.

This school year’s high need areas include:

  • Guidance counselors
  • School psychologists
  • Math teachers
  • Language Arts teachers
  • Science teachers
  • Special Education teachers
  • Reading teachers
  • Speech Language Pathologists
