Below are candidates running for the Board of County Commissioners, District 1 on August 18.
Doug Shields, a Clermont resident for 10 years, first got involved in Lake County politics when he saw a yellow “Land Use Amendment” sign next to his home in March of 2014. He made some calls and soon discovered that the landowner was asking for a massive increase in the number of allowable homes on the vacant land than what was currently allowed. Thanks to his efforts of first learning the Lake County planning and political processes and then organizing his neighbors, he was able to save the sensitive land from overdevelopment. The community website, KeepClermontRural.com, remains active to this day and has been used to fight encroachment on the Green Swamp and other sensitive areas. The group’s success has been mixed, partially due to incumbent Commissioner Sullivan, who always seems to vote against the community’s wishes. When Doug learned that Commissioner Sullivan was running unopposed, he decided to run for Lake County Commissioner. The time has come for a County Commissioner to respond to the needs of the community! (Doug Shields)
