The 2021-22 school year will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021, for Lake County Schools and will include Veterans’ Day as a student holiday, five days off at Thanksgiving and a little more than two weeks off for winter break.

The new calendar was approved by the School Board at its Dec. 14 meeting after employees and the community had an opportunity to choose between two options through an online survey.

Both calendar options had school starting on Tuesday, Aug. 10. State statute states that school cannot begin before Aug. 10. Both options also recognized Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day as student holidays. But there were some distinct differences between the two.

The spring break dates were different on each option; one option had Veterans Day as a day off while the other had students in school on Veterans Day with relevant activities offered in classes, and the last day of school was different between the two options.

A summary is shown below.

OPTION 1:

  • Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2021 – Students attend school with relevant activities to honor veterans
  • Full week off at Thanksgiving – Nov. 22-26, 2021.
  • Winter break begins Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, with classes resuming Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022
  • Spring Break – Monday, March 21, 2022 – Friday, March 25, 2022
  • Friday, April 15, 2022 – Non-student day
  • Last Day of classes – Thursday, May 26, 2022

OPTION 2 — Selected by the School Board:

  • Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2021 – Student holiday
  • Full week off at Thanksgiving – Nov. 22-26, 2021
  • Winter break begins Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, with classes resuming Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022
  • Spring Break – Monday, March 14, 2022 – Friday, March 18, 2022
  • Friday, April 15, 2022 – Students attend school
  • Last Day of classes – Friday, May 27, 2022

Links to the surveys were posted on the district website and on its Facebook and Twitter pages. Additionally, a notice was sent home to parents districtwide via the Peachjar web application.

With 50.9% of all respondents choosing Option 2 in the survey, staff recommended approval of Option 2 to the School Board, and board members voted unanimously in favor of Option 2 at their meeting.
