Groveland held its holiday event Lighting The Way to Groveland’s 100 Years on December 10-11.  Kids of all ages were able to meet Santa Claus, watch a tree lighting ceremony and shop at the Holiday Farmers Market on Friday evening.  Saturday started with the city’s longest and best-attended parade and Holiday Street Festival.

Mayor Wilson kicked off the spirit of the City saying, “I love it! This is what I’ve been waiting for.  This is my favorite time of the year and this is my favorite day.  This lets me be ‘silly me’ and get other people into the spirit.”

Police Chief Shawn Ramsey added, “this has been a successful event from day one.  There is plenty of parking within a couple of blocks and we have a great turnout.  Once folks find the lots, they will be able to access all the events.”

Mike Hein, City Manager commented, “It was a great event, a great turnout and I couldn’t be happier”.  He also reported that the couple who play the authentic Mr. and Mrs. Claus were not able to attend this year.

Santa And Mrs Claus Greet their Guests (Jean and David Littiken)

David and Jean Littiken have portrayed the Claus’ at the Groveland holiday events for over 10 years.  Family friend James Dunn of Mascotte reports they are doing fine and are looking forward to returning next year.  It was unfortunate that the Littikens missed this year as sharing this event with the children is a highlight of their Christmas season.

Santa’s elves this year, Amanda Traywick and Paula Hall were in full Christmas regalia, shepherding the children and families to Santa Claus from 5-7 PM Friday.  Santa’s return outside to the base of the Christmas tree was very popular with kids of all ages, even the biggest kids.  “Kids” like DeWayne Jones, one of the City Planners, who was there pretending he brought his wife and son to see Santa.  It was clear that DeWayne was the one enjoying the Santa visit.

The City reported a record number of floats and entrants.  The entire parade route was lined with residents of all ages and parade fans from near and far looking for family members and cheering for their favorite floats.  The return of candy being spread by the parade participants was one of many huge hits with the children.
