The Jewish community of Lake County will be completing and welcoming its first Torah Scroll — Judaism’s most sacred object — with a unique and celebratory ceremony on July 10th, beginning at 4 pm at Gabby’s Banquet Hall, located at 699 S. US-27, Clermont.
After the completion of the Torah, the sacred scroll will be taken to the streets under a traditional canopy in a joyous procession that will include a float, live music, torches and dancing.
An authentic Torah scroll is a masterpiece of labor and skill. The Torah scroll is between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment-cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exact Torah law specifications. It contains exactly 304,805 letters and the resulting handwritten scroll takes months to complete. Timeless dictums hold for a certified Torah scribe and everything from the character of the scribe to the quality of the parchment and type of ink are taken into account. The slightest error voids the entire 54-portion parchment.
Rabbi Moshe Dubinsky is the director of Chabad of S Lake County, the organization that will be hosting the event. The Rabbi explains, “The scroll is an appropriate addition and a tremendous milestone for the local Jewish community as it represents the unbroken chain of Jewish tradition and survival”. He adds, “The ancient wisdom contained in the scroll is eternal. Possessing our own Torah causes great joy and celebration.”
