A Movie Review By Anthony Ritter

This weekend the little yellow minions are back in theaters for the 5th time in Minions: The Rise of Gru. This film is a sequel to the Minions which came out in 2015 but a prequel to the first movie, Despicable Me. In Minions: The Rise of Gru, we follow these loveable little guys as they attempt to help Gru join the most famous league of super villains. Of course, things get out of hand and soon Gru and his minions are on the run from the same villains he had hoped to join.

What follows is The Good, The Bad, and The Spoilers of Minions: The Rise of Gru.

The Good

This film focuses on the humor that has worked well for the previous 4 movies. The slapstick humor of the film will keep you chuckling. The best point about this movie however is the number of references it has to the original Despicable Me. We meet a bank teller who shows off a photo of his young son, Vector. When Gru arrives to his interview for the Vicious 6, the man working the counter is none other than Dr. Nefario.

The Bad

The major issue I had with this movie is that, as stated previously, it focuses on the humor that has worked well for the previous 4 movies. The story was unique, but felt like “just another” movie with minions. Perfect for the kids, but as an adult I was not laughing as much as the kids were in the audience.

My Overall Opinion

Minions: The Rise of Gru is another summer movie made for the whole family. Kids will love watching the mischief unfold, whether it’s a fart bomb or minions trying to learn kung-fu. If you enjoyed the other Despicable Me movies, then you need to see this one too. However, my recommendation would be to wait for this one to hit a streaming service or rental box.
