A Movie Review By Anthony Ritter
This Friday, a new modern take on the romantic comedy genre hits theaters. Bros is brought to audiences by Universal Studios and it was written by and stars Billy Eichner.
Bros follows Bobby Leiber (Eichner) as he navigates being a successful gay man, while also struggling to find a meaningful connection with someone. Bobby meets Larry (Aaron Shepard) who also struggles with commitment issues. Bobby and Larry attempt a relationship and must overcome the hurdles that pop up in their way.
What follows is The Good, The Bad, and The Spoilers of Bros.
The Good
Billy Eichner deserves a ton of credit for the success of this movie. Not only does he do a phenomenal job playing Bobby, but also the writing in this film is superb. Bobby’s personality conflicts with Larry are so believable and relatable to anyone who has tried to tackle the dating world. The initial attraction, the awkward courtship and flirting, the more serious conversations, were all so accurately portrayed by Eichner and Shepard.
The writing of this film had to be its best feature. It was very witty and did a great job tastefully addressing the LGBTQ+ and straight communities with jokes and jabs. The comedy was so well timed, and at some points there wasn’t time to stop laughing between the jokes. Gay men, pointing out the problems with the gay dating community, had me laughing so hard and was probably one of my favorite parts.
The Bad
The only problem I had with this movie is that some scenes felt forced, the last scene in particular. I understand that Bros is the first major romantic comedy between two men, so it is used as a platform to address concepts and topics that some people find sensitive. This is done well, but at some points in the film, it is very obvious that a particular scene is forced into the film to address one of these issues. The writing of the film is so well done, but periodically feels interrupted.
My Overall Opinion
It is sad that this movie will not be everyone’s cup of tea. There are people who will avoid Bros simply because they will label it as “a gay rom-com”. Yes, this movie is about 2 men falling in love, but it is also a very funny, very relatable love story. If you love a good romantic comedy, I encourage you to give this one a chance.
