A Movie Review By Anthony Ritter
Talk to Me is the newest scary movies to hit theaters. A group of teenagers discover that they can use an embalmed hand to communicate with the dead. The experience is addicting and they soon relish the thrill to keep using the hand. Unfortunately, their game had frightening supernatural consequences.
What follows is The Good, The Bad, and The Spoilers of Talk to Me.
The Good
I love a good horror movie, sadly a lot of horror movies over the last few years focus on jump scares more than the actual story. However, Talk to Me does a great job delivering an original story, filled with more chilling moments, then actual jump scares. (There are still plenty of those) The story is intriguing and will keep you questioning what is real and what is not throughout the entire film. By far my favorite aspect of this movie is the ending. Although my reviews typically have spoilers, I cannot bring myself to spoil what I thought was a superb ending to this horror film.
Often, horror movies fall short due to believability. “Did you hear the loud moaning coming from the basement of the supposedly haunted house? Let’s go check it out with absolutely not means of light!” Talk to Me mostly avoids this by focusing on one truth, some teenagers will make bad decisions for fun. It is not hard at all for me to believe that there are groups of people out there that would absolutely use an embalmed hand and talk to spirits for a thrilling experience.
The Bad
The first few minutes of Talk to Me are intense, and confusing. The intense part did not bother me at all, and if you are into scary/horror movies, you should not be bothered at all. The issue I had with those first few minutes is the confusion regarding the passage of time. We see someone stab their brother then himself, followed by scenes of a girl at a funeral, and later, the same girl living with her friends. These events occur one after the other and it is not until later in the film that you find out that they were years apart.
My Overall Opinion
I give Talk to Me a chilling rating of 8 out of 10.
Talk to Me is one of the best scary movies I have seen in some time and probably the best of the year thus far. The story is original and it focuses more on giving audiences chills, than plain old jump scares. While the intro of the movie felt a bit confusing, audiences will recover quickly and enjoy the ride. If you are into scary movies, this one is a must-see.
