Before Neverland and Lost Boys, before Pixie Dust and Tick Toc Croc, Before Happy Thoughts and The Second Star to the Right and Straight on till Morning….There was a Boy, a Girl, and magical Star Stuff.

This week Lake Minneola High School Birds of Play Theatre embarks on the epic journey of how Neverland came to be with all of the familiar characters like Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Wendy and more in the prequel story: Peter & the Starcatcher.  Based on the novel by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry, the play is written By Rick Elice with original music by Wayne Barker. Performances will take place at 7pm on September 21st, 22nd, 23rd and a special Monday night performance on the 25th

Peter & the Starcatcher is a coming-of-age adventure story about how a nameless orphan — inspired by a remarkable and ambitious girl — became the strange and celebrated hero that is the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. For two hours, the LMHS company of actors will make theatrical magic by playing dozens of characters: sailors, pirates, British naval officers, Mollusk natives and orphans in addition to eighteen major roles. The original Broadway production was a deliberately low-budget spectacle: an extravaganza of staging that relied on suggestion and storytelling rather than expensive set pieces and LMHS will evoke that same imaginative experience with their production.

The Lake Minneola High School Theatre program “Birds of Play” is led by Mrs. Kaitlin Derbyshire. She has been with the program since the very beginning in 2011 when the high school was established. But apart from running the club “Birds of Play”, she has been a Teacher & Program Director of Theatre & Dance at LMHS. Throughout the years the program has put up amazing performances like Oklahoma, All Shook Up and recently Into The Woods. With success as we have alumni who went on to successfully study theatre in colleges all over the country.

In 2023 we were given the honor to perform on the mainstage of the Thespian Florida State Festival performing for over 1000 students and teachers. This production of “Rabbit Hole” was one of the highlights of our incredible high school theatre. Our first production this year “Peter and The Starcatcher” will kick off a new year of exciting, moving and thrilling productions.
