Dr. Heather Bigard and LSSC Graduates

Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) recently marked a significant milestone in its journey of growth and transformation with the commencement of its South Lake Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday, May 1st, held at the Clermont Arts and Recreation Center. The event showcased the college’s commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.

The ceremony commenced with an air of solemnity and pride, as Nora Rackley, Faculty Marshal, formally opened the ceremony. The National Anthem was sung by Jossette White, LSSC Associate in Arts, followed by the presentation of colors by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard. Jennifer Hooten, Vice Chair of the District Board of Trustees, delivered the invocation. Senator Dennis A. Baxley delivered the commencement speech.

Dr. Heather Bigard, President

Dr. Heather Bigard, President of LSSC, extended a warm welcome to the attendees, acknowledging the significance of the momentous occasion. All gathered to celebrate the achievements of over 650+ graduates from the South Lake and Leesburg campuses, marking the largest graduating class in the college’s history.

Among the distinguished graduates, the ceremony recognized those who excelled academically, with distinctions such as Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude. Kendyll Campi, an outstanding student, delivered an inspiring speech, reflecting on the journey of growth and transformation experienced by her and the graduating class.

Amidst the celebration, the Order of the LakeHawk was conferred upon exemplary students who demonstrated exceptional academic accomplishments, committed college engagement, and noteworthy community service. The recipients of this prestigious award—Virginia De Flaviis, Kendyll Campi, Taylor Ford, and Hannah Smith—stood as shining examples of the college’s values and aspirations.

Dr. Bigard’s recognition of each graduate underscored the college’s commitment to nurturing individual talents and fostering a sense of belonging within the LSSC community. As the ceremony drew to a close, amidst cheers and applause, it became evident that Lake-Sumter State College’s journey of vision, growth, and transformation was not just a narrative but a lived experience, embodied by its graduates and echoed in their future endeavors.
