The Clermont Police Department brought its seasoned police officers and basketball veterans to a game of fun on Saturday, September 7th. The game, held at the Minneola City Hall complex, introduced a team of staff and volunteers from the Way Academy as a fundraising event for the school. The spirited game began with competitive scores for both teams. However, by the 2nd quarter, the Way Academy dominated the scoreboard with three-point shots that led the team to eventual victory.

Nonetheless, both teams maintained fun rivalry in the sixty-minute game ending with a score of 61-30, with the Way Academy prevailing. The game was not only for a good cause but also gave the spectators a glimpse into the community-relations side of the police officers who not only played in the basketball game but mingled and conversed with the crowd both before and after the game.

Spectators were offered a chance to show off skills of their own with free throw shots during the halftime break. Winning gifts for adults and children were provided by sponsors including radio station Hot 95.9, Publix, and Inspired Films.

The Way Academy is a Christian-based private school at 105 East Baker Street, Minneola. According to board member Erin Carney, the middle school will include the 9th grade this school year. “Our goal is to add grade each year while reaching students who may not be able to attend a regular Christian-based school. We want to prepare students in a Christian way to enter the world academically and athletically,” says Carney.

The school, founded by Dr. Charles Williams Jr. in 2023, is designed to provide a stellar Christian environment while focusing on narrowing the achievement and opportunity gaps for students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The school also provides volunteer opportunities for qualified people who are skilled in teaching, coaching, specialized trades, fine arts or athletics.
