The month of October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Lake County Clerk’s Office staff gathered much-needed supplies for local survivors of domestic abuse in support of Haven of Lake and Sumter Counties.

“Abuse comes in many different forms. It’s not only physical violence, but it can also be sexual violence, threats, or emotional abuse by one intimate partner against another,” said Gary Cooney, Lake County Clerk & Comptroller. “This is the third year that our team stepped up by gathering donations during October to support those who have fled a horrible situation, and are seeking assistance from Haven.”

Items collected include toiletries, bedding and linens, cleaning supplies, diapers, and gift cards for non-perishable food.

Last year, the Lake County Clerk’s Office processed 1,657 petitions for domestic violence injunctions. At the beginning of October, the office joined a statewide initiative to provide Hope Cards to victims who are issued a final judgment for an injunction for protection. The Hope Card provides proof of a valid protective order and allows law enforcement and other authorities to quickly identify information related to a case. Persons seeking an injunction may contact the Injunctions Office at 352-742-6625.

Haven of Lake & Sumter Counties, Inc., was established in 1977 to meet the needs of domestic violence victims. In its 40+ years of existence, Haven has expanded its base of services and now provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and sexual violence.
