Revisiting History
Approximately 40 years ago, as part of Clermont’s centennial celebration of its 1884 founding, Miriam Johnson and Rosemary Young co-authored Clermont: Gem of the Hills, a History of Clermont, Florida, and Neighboring Communities. Published in 1984, this comprehensive history quickly became a treasured resource for local historians.
Johnson and Young’s effort was monumental, especially in the pre-digital age. Johnson, a Centennial Planning Committee member and dedicated historian, spent countless hours researching South Lake Press archives, interviewing locals, and transcribing notes on her typewriter. She even used the back of ad sheets to economize her resources. Young, active in the Chamber of Commerce, collaborated closely to ensure the book’s success.
A Modern Revision
The original manuscript and printing plates were lost, but the Cooper Memorial Library Association took up the daunting task of retyping over 300 pages and locating more than 200 photographs to create a revised edition. This updated version includes new chapters detailing events beyond 1984, with contributions from the late Ann Dupee, a former South Lake Press owner and devoted library board member.
The revised book, CLERMONT: From Gem of the Hills to Choice of Champions, offers a journey through time—from the Ice Age and the first Native American inhabitants to the founders of modern Clermont and events leading up to 2019. Featuring hundreds of rare photographs and untold stories, this expanded edition brings Clermont’s history to life like never before.
Dedication to Legacy
This labor of love is dedicated to the memory of Ann Dupee and Ray Goodgame, two passionate Board Members whose unwavering dedication significantly enhanced the quality of life in the Clermont community. Their legacy lives on through this book, which stands as a testament to their commitment and vision.
