Florida continues to be one of the most popular states where older Americans choose to move or retire, reflecting its appeal and suitability for this demographic group.

A study by Beca Life examined the latest data from the 2022 Census to determine the median age in each state and the percentage of the population over 65. The data concluded that Florida is Aging. More than one-fifth (21.3%) of Florida’s total population is composed of people who are 65 years old or older. This is a significant proportion and indicates a relatively large senior population.

Florida, known for its warm climate and retiree-friendly amenities, remains a top destination for older Americans. Its weather is warm and pleasant year-round, which is attractive to retirees looking to avoid colder climates. Additionally, Florida has numerous facilities and services that cater specifically to older adults, such as retirement communities, healthcare services, and recreational activities.

On the downside: Certain areas in Florida, especially coastal and tourist-heavy regions, can be expensive, with high property prices, insurance costs (particularly for homes prone to hurricanes or flooding), and overall living expenses. Other challenges include traffic congestion, pests (such as alligators, palmetto bugs, mosquitoes and termites), tourism and the onslaught of seasonal snowbirds.

Despite these challenges, Florida remains an attractive destination for many retirees due to its warm climate, no state income tax, and wealth of activities designed for older adults. By carefully researching specific locations and considering personal priorities, retirees can make informed decisions about whether Florida is the right fit for their golden years.
