Every month, from September through May, Clermont Garden Club members loan plants to Cooper Memorial Library and Clermont City Hall to promote horticulture awareness and connect our community to Clermont Garden Club’s programs, civic activities, and community outreach.

Clermont Garden Club member, Robin Farmer, loaned a Parlor Palm to Cooper Memorial Library for the month of January. Parlor palm, also known as Chamaedorea elegans, has lush, tropical fronds and is one of the best types of palms for beginners. Parlor palms grow best in tropical or indoor conditions with bright, indirect sunlight, well-drained acidic to neutral soil, and temperatures between 65°F and 75°F. Be careful not to overwater or allow the parlor palm to get too much sunlight. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly to encourage growth. Parlor palms are slow growers that can take years to reach full height (2-6 feet indoors and 6-16 feet outdoors). Parlor palms can live for a few decades as an indoor tree and even longer outdoors in the right climate.

Helen Ribbe loaned her Rose-Painted Calathea (Goeppertia roseopicta) to City Hall. The Rose-Painted Calathea is native to Central America. It likes full shade and can be grown as an indoor plant or in the landscape. It should be watered every 21 days and it is not necessary to fertilize it. It has attractive, variegated foliage with a dark-purplish underside. It is a member of the prayer plant family and will fold up its leaves at night, allowing a full view of its colorful underside.

Clermont Garden Club members meet monthly (September through May) at the clubhouse located at 849 West Avenue, Clermont, FL. We warmly welcome guests to attend our meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 9:30 am. Clermont Garden Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
