The Groveland Historical Society is excited to announce its annual essay contest, open to all students residing in the Groveland and Mascotte areas. This contest provides a wonderful opportunity for young historians to explore and share Florida’s rich past while competing for cash prizes.
Contest Divisions:
- Division 1: 12 years and younger
- Division 2: 13-18 years
The top-ranked essayists from each division will be invited to present their essays before a panel of judges on March 29, 2025.
Cash Prizes:
- 1st Place: $50
- 2nd Place: $25

Essay Requirements:
- Deadline: Essays must be received by March 18, 2025.
- Topic: Must cover the history of a person, place, or event within the state of Florida.
- Length: Between 1,000 to 2,000 words.
- Accuracy: Essays should strive for historical accuracy.
- Sources: Must include at least one source from inside the Groveland Historical Museum or from the society’s website: www.GrovelandHistory.org/p/timeline.html.
- Citations: Division 2 students must use MLA or APA format for citations.
- Presentation: Essays should be orally presented by the student in 15 minutes or less.
This contest is a fantastic way for students to engage with local history while honing their research and writing skills. We encourage all eligible students to participate and look forward to hearing their insights on Florida’s fascinating past!
