Beta Theta-ESA, a local service organization founded over 45 years ago, recently made a meaningful donation to Read to Sydney, a nonprofit committed to helping children improve their reading skills through the comforting presence of therapy dogs.

Founded by Thom Battisto, Read to Sydney was inspired by Thom’s beloved dog, Sydney, an Australian Shepherd/Chow mix who had a natural bond with children. In 2011, after witnessing a young child engage positively by reading to Sydney, Thom launched the organization with the goal of easing reading anxiety in children. Since then, the group has reached an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 children through visits to libraries, schools, and community events.

The program, which now includes Sunny, a husky mix who succeeded therapy dogs Sydney and Toby, offers comfort, encourages literacy, and helps children gain confidence in a judgment-free setting. Sunny has also played a key role in the placement of ten community Lending Library Boxes in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Clermont. Additionally, the organization has gone mobile with a bookmobile that delivers free books to children at local events.
Entirely supported by public donations and Thom’s personal commitment, the program continues to thrive. Beyond Read to Sydney, Thom remains active in the community through the Kiwanis Club of Clermont and has led numerous charitable initiatives, earning him the George E. Hixson Award for outstanding community service.
